To bring a car or not?

After orientation I can already tell that parking is going to be a nightmare when everyone’s back from break. As a sophomore transfer the only place I can buy a permit at is on one of the lots at west campus. Is it even worth it if I’m going to be living on campus?

If you’re going to be living on campus, then I wouldn’t bring a car. Parking is expensive (and walking from west campus to get your car will be far, even if you take a CABS bus it will take some time). Most things that you would want to do are within walking distance or you can take a COTA bus to get to them easily, there are stops everywhere that will take you up and down High Street and anywhere in the Columbus area.

If you’re living on campus, there is no particular need for you to own a car, unless you have a job somewhere you can’t travel to by bus or by walking. The CABS campus-only bus system is actually pretty great just for getting around campus, and the COTA bus system for the entire city is great as well–it is free for students, and there is a bus line that will take you to the Short North or downtown in 10-20 minutes.

If you do want to bring a car, you could potentially park it on a street near campus that doesn’t require a parking pass. It is difficult to find a spot, but I kept my car on Chittenden, West 9th and West 8th for most of this year and didn’t have any issues other than a $50 parking ticket for parking within 1 ft of a handicapped ramp.

Yeah that’s what I figure, I’m leaning towards flying there and getting a bicycle.

Ha! A car on campus. OP is so cute.

Actually, parking in west campus isn’t that bad. I haven’t had an issue finding a parking space yet. However, as mentioned above, parking passes are expensive! I think I paid 222 or somewhere around there for the spring semester. Cool thing about it is they refund you for the time unused at the end of the semester.

The only thing I’ve really used my car for was when I decided to go home for the weekend. Other than that, I just burned up a bunch of money by paying to have it sit there. Plus on the car payment itself :-p. In the end, i’d say the convenience of being able to go where I want when I want and not have to wait on a bus (besides for CABS to get me there) is worth it.

Oh well, if we’re counting West Campus as “Campus.” :-P

Lol Yeah it is way out there. I walked from WC5 to the Neil Building (south campus) and it took me like 50 minutes… Still beat the bus though! :-p If you do bring a car, try not to return to the lot at night when the CLS driver is on break :-p

Well I got no choice but to my car now, I’ll be taking part in the Army’s ROTC/SMP program; can’t make those drills without a car! WC5 it is, even though it galls me to pay $33/month for a parking space so far out.

It’s really not all that bad… Just have to catch the CLS or CLN if you’re going there from the Neil Building. Kind of sucks on the weekends because you can only catch the CLS which goes through south campus, then to north, then to west. But even thats only maybe 20 mins or so.
