To bunk or not to bunk? EXPERIENCES WITH DORM BUNK BEDS PLEASE

At my future school, there's the option to leave the beds separate or to bunk them. Most rooms have them separate, but it's a fairly small room and I feel like it may have significantly more space if bunked.
So, pros and cons of bunked vs single beds?
PS. - I already know my roommate and neither of us are planning on partying or having guys over, if that's a factor.

I like sitting on my bed, so unbunked works better for me. But you should talk it out with your roommate, if you decide to bunk make sure you’ll both be happy with top/bottom!

Bunked:
Pros:
More space
Cons:
If the person on the top bunk flops onto their bed, it feels like a small earthquake to the person on the bottom bunk so there’s a chance you could wake each other up by moving too hard.
Argument over who gets the top or bottom bunk (some people alternate)
Single beds:
Pros:
You can jump on it more I guess
A little more flexibility in general?
Cons:
Less space
IDK that’s all I can think of. I have a bunk bed and I think it’s fine? I study in bed all the time and my roommate’s only in bed to sleep. It’s only annoying when I wake up b/c of her alarm and she’s angry about waking up so she’ll flop in bed (giving me a mini heart attack).

Try it. If you don’t like it, go back to singles. Usually the beds are designed to work either way. Do you have the option to loft the bed without it being a bunk bed?

@musician8800‌ @noname87‌ Loft beds are a great idea. Tons of room for even a little furniture in your dorm and you can put your desk and chair under the bed.

I would do it separate. It’s much more convenient and comfortable. You’ll get more space bunked, but how much time do you wanna spend in the dorm anyways?

Personally, I would keep them separate the space may be a little tighter but its more convinent even as far as having friends over you have more space to sit.

And I hate to be this person, but you say neither one of you plan on having guys over but keep in mind that it could happen ams if it does its going to suck for the person with the top bunk

@failure622 good point, I like sitting on my bed too… my roommate and I are discussing this too, I just wanted to get opinions and experience from those who’ve had this situation :)

@fantasticfailure awesome post, thanks!!!

@noname87 @bamaballer95 unfortunately no lofts :/

Also @noname87 this is gonna sound ridiculous, but I hadn’t really considered the fact that we could always rearrange if it doesn’t work…thanks!

@teenbodybuilder yeah, separate may be what we end up with, but you haven’t seen how small the rooms are!

@jazzii oohh good point about seating space… and go ahead, be that person! :slight_smile: thanks for the input

Hey Musician8800,

Personally I have always preferred to have separate, unbunked beds for convenience. When you get back to your room at night after a long day, it is must easier to jump into your bed that is on ground level rather than having to climb up a later onto your bunked bed. Also when you are on the top bed, there is never enough room to just sit up and relax on your bed or even use your laptop.

For the past three years, I have avoided bunking beds in the dorm room and the space you lose is worth it for your comfort and slight privacy.
