To Current Students: Why Did You Choose Brown?

I was lucky enough to receive four great acceptances this year, and I’ve narrowed down the list to my top two. I really love both, even though they are quite different in some respects, and I know I’m going to have a really difficult decision to make.

Basically, my question is: why did you ultimately decide that Brown was the perfect school for you?

Obviously, I know that fit is different for everyone and whatnot, but I am just curious and some of your insights may help me decide.

Thank you so much for sharing!

The student body. I felt so welcomed and I felt that these people were all so genuine. The academics are great at any school I was looking at. I was trying to find one where I would ultimately be happy.

Brown wasn’t my first choice. But everyday I am here I realize more and more why I am here. I am always challenged socially, intellectually, and in anyway I can imagine. I am always asking myself why… why… why.

Brown is great. Most of my professors care about my success and also my feelings as a human being. My first choice was (ironically) U Chicago. I visited both schools, U Chicago and Brown. U Chicago fit my type - A/eccentric personality a bit more than the laid backness of Brown, but when Financial Aid forms came my family and I could not afford U Chicago. So I had to come to Brown (the fact that it was an ivy, and the fact that they had offered me more money). Now at Brown I think that I stick out like a sore thumb (sometimes) but everyone is nice and I have learned so much about myself. Though, I do think I would have been more of a social fit at U Chicago, but perhaps not as developed in social/talking matters.

In short, I don’t know your other choice, but Brown is definitely a school that will challenge you to be a better person and will challenge you intellectually.

I think that you first should rid yourself of the idea that there is a ‘perfect’ school for you. There isn’t, and I think this is why a lot of freshmen might be disenchanted with their choices.

I chose between Brown, a couple LACs, and a large in-state university. Ultimately, the question was not which was perfect for me, or not even which was the best (because what does that even mean?); it was, ‘Where will I be happiest?’ I knew that I would always regret it if I gave up my chance to go to Brown, and I made the right choice.

Hope it helps to think of it that way.
