To EDII or not, that is the question...

Hey everyone,

Hoping you can share some of your guidance with me today.

I applied EA and have been deferred from Georgetown and UChicago. Along with these two I plan on applying to NYU Stern and Columbia. Now as I approach the January 1st deadline for Columbia and NYU I'm presented with two choices.
**
1. Apply to Columbia and NYU Stern via Regular Decision as planned.
2. Apply to NYU Stern EDII and Columbia Regular Decision.
**
Reasons why I think I think I should apply NYU EDII:
[ul]
[] I think applying EDII could possibly help my admissions chances because it would let NYU know that they are my number one choice.
[] My 1st semester senior grades aren't the best (3.6 or 3.5 vs by overall average of 3.7) , mainly as a result of a pretty severe illness I had earlier in the semester (something my counselor said she would address in my mid-year report). [/ul]

Reasons why I don't think I should apply NYU EDII:
[ul]

[] Applying early decision instead of regular decision might not increase my chance of acceptance at all.
[]I could get accepted to both (which I really find hard to believe but it's a possibility), in which case I might regret applying to EDII (even though at this point I can't be certain that I would pick Columbia over NYU because I have not had a chance to visit Columbia's Campus yet.
[li] I may get accepted from one of my deferred schools (UChicago or Georgetown) and may change my mind (seems quite unlikely) for some reason and choose those over NYU.
[/li][/ul]

Am I just worrying too much about this? Should I just let everything be and stick with applying RD to both schools, or should I give EDII a shot with the hope that it gives me an advantage which I otherwise wouldn't have.

Thanks!

Honestly I think you’re just stressing because you got deferred. That’s what it sounds like. I would just apply RD and see how it goes. At least you got deferred instead of rejected. I think you have a shot! EDII probably will make little to no difference. Unless you reallllllly want to go to one of those schools and can’t picture yourself anywhere else… Just go with RD. Best of luck and I’m sure you’ll get into some great schools!

Answer mine? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1260515-chance-senior-georgetown.html

I’d apply to Stern ED. The 2 deferrals at schools significantly easier to get into give you a good read of the likelihood at Columbia. ED helps a lot at Stern. Yes, you could get into one of the 2 that deferred you, but you have under a 15% chance.

@JW135167 Thanks for the reply. Ya it might just be the nerves getting to me…
NYU and Columbia are my top schools with NYU getting the edge because I haven’t visited Columbia. I guess what it really comes down to is like you say… will applying EDII really help me out in any way.

@Waverly Exactly how my train of thought was… Georgetown and UChicago say in their deferral letters that approximately 10% of those deferred are accepted in April.

and if what you say is correct, that ED helps with Stern, that sounds like the smartest route to go.

Anyone else familiar with the benefit (or lack thereof) of applying early decision is welcome to comment.
