Okay, so congrats to those who made it! We are the "top highschool students in the nation" whohoo, actually, i dont believe that, but its a nice thought. It is really nervewracking waiting for the next cut-off... is there anything we can do from now until Feb 25 to help our chances?

Also.
My mid-year report will NOT help me, but uh, how important is that (i have an 89, an 86, but still a wieghted 4.0...will it hurt?)

My understanding is that in addition to excellent stats, the scholars need to also have excellent ECs, particularly when it comes to leadership and service. What kinds of things have you semifinalists done that you hope will make you stand out in the pool?

Do any of you know scholars? If so, what did they have going for them beside stats?

i've got the leadership and service... i've also won an award for an article i wrote, but i didnt fit it on my app. should i send them something?

What exactly are you all doing in regard to leadership and service? I am thinking that Emory may be looking for some results, not just leadership titles and service hours, but I could be wrong. I am guessing that stats have a lot to do with the initial cut. The rest, though, might be based more on ECs, leadership, service -- what it looks like one has to offer besides making good grades as a member of Emory's community.

I've led the 2nd largest club at my school since the end of freshman year, i've done a lot with service (hours, leadership, fundraising), i've also been really involved in theatre, and have won a state competition.

I think you're right, Northstarmom. My d was very excited to receive the semi-finalist packet today, but I don't know how she'll stand out in that very talented group of kids. I've privately thought that her service is the weakest part of her overall app, but her ECs (dance and flute) haven't left her with the time to make a tremendous impact with a particular service organization. She's participated in some major fundraisers while in hs that have required a true commitment in terms of hours (particularly last year's Relay for Life), but for a different organization each year - there's no one cause that's "hers." She's tutored, and has done several performances for a local cultural resource council, but she hasn't done what so many other CC kids have re service. Our hope is that her depth in her major academic interest (Latin) will appeal to the committee.

What a thrill to be admitted to Emory, however the scholarship thing plays out. Congrats to all!

Thanks and congrats to you too! I didn't add her to the propective Emory Scholars roster on the other thread because I'm superstitious and didn't want to jinx anything. That's one very impressive list of applicants.
