To how many National Merit schools did you/your senior apply?

My son applied to one.

Just wondering if he should add more to the list?? Feeling a little panicky now that he has been deferred from some of his other schools.

With very few exceptions (e.g., Tulsa, Fordham) the schools with the biggest offers are pretty much safeties for a NMF (e.g., Kentucky, UNM, ASU).

4 - Alabama, Auburn, Fordham, and Central Florida

5 if you count USC

If you aren’t panicky about money and have no interest in any of the schools, then not much point. Has he at least one or two reasonable non-NMF admissions safeties, like state flagships?

Some, not all, of the NMF scholarship schools take quite late applications from NMFs. You could call a couple that might be of interest and apply later if allowed. Some waive app fees for NMFs. UCF is one. UTulsa does, at least for early apps.

An interesting story at S’s HS. One of his NMSF friends wants very much to be able to ski recreationally while in college. But the Colorado/VT/etc schools are unaffordable for his family. So he applied to U Idaho because it’s free, and may actually attend.

Take heart. Some of those deferrals become acceptances later.

My S applied to 2 of the NMF full tuitionish schools that he likes quite well. Under pressure from a financially neurotic parent he also applied to a couple of the full rides which he thinks he does not like so well, but apps were easy.

1-USC but they only offer ½ tuition not ROOM AND BOARD, so it was too expensive.

For Florida residents all state schools are now NMF schools thanks to the Fl Incentive scholarship. My S applied to 2, UCF and UF. UCF guarantees all 4 years regardless of funding while UF does not.

Zero. The best I could get from National Merit would’ve been Texas A&M, but I already had automatic admission to UT Austin with decent odds at a Honors scholarship (ended up with a $48k scholarship, so full tuition+ there). Didn’t see the point in doing so, although I rethought my decision a few times. But I never saw myself ending up anywhere in the SEC.

If you’re concerned, why not have your son apply to a couple more? It looks like UKentucky is the only one that your son applied to. There are others.

I applied (and got accepted) to two state universities, one in state and one out of state. The in-state college gives a good scholarship to NMSF (not quite full ride, but almost) so I’ll go there is by some chance I don’t make NMF. The out of state college gives a full ride to NMF, so I’ll go there if I make NMF (which I think I will.) There is no point in your son applying to a college if he has no interest in going there, but if he could find some more he would be interested in, then he might want to apply.

Son applied to Alabama, Kentucky, Cincinnati and Michigan State. Oklahoma is just too far away. He has also applied to Ohio State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Yale, Amherst, MIT and Chicago. Notre Dame deferred him through early action, which was an eye opener for us. I’d say we’re not too optimistic about anywhere else but OSU at this point. I’d like to see him apply to UofM, but I don’t know if he will. OSU might be too late for the big merit scholarships. He qualifies for a couple of legacy scholarships at MSU, so their FA package should be pretty close to all but Kentucky’s.

Fordham and cincinnati were the NMS schools. He also applied to 3 other schools.

son applied to Univ. of Ok and got in. They have been incredible in terms of calling, doing so many things for him. He has been quite impressed. Of course, it’s a safety, but we will have to go see it, and see if he likes it at all.

D applied to Alabama, Fordham, BU and USC due to their NM awards. Already heard from Fordham and Bama.

D has applied just to one, but also applied to other safety schools that will also be affordable so she will for sure have some choices.

Son applied to 3 - Alabama, Texas A&M and in-state UF.

Two, though apparently one was not an automatic scholarship.

My son looked at several but only applied to Alabama.

Just UA although lots of other full tuition offers from others like Univ of Arizona, U of Miss, Miss State, Arizona State, Iowa, etc he wasn’t interested in so didn’t apply.

@rdtsmith, UIowa offered full tuition? I wasn’t aware they have big money for NMF. I know ISU offers full tuition to in-state NMF. Was the offer based solely on NMF status? Is it something new? I see $5,000/yr for OOS NMF and $3,000/yr general NMF award, though it isn’t clear how they stack. And a special $2,000/yr that 5 students receive.

Too many really, but wanted options – Oklahoma, Idaho, Washington State, Fordham, Nebraska, Minnesota and Michigan State. Also applied to four other universities. DD is looking at GPA required to renew (ranges from 2.0 to 3.5) among other factors. Already accepted to all public universities with scholarship offers.
