Here's a quick question: How bad does taking the IB math SL course (as opposed to math HL) look when it comes to admissions to really competitive schools (like Princeton)? If math really isn't my thing, is taking math SL rather than HL going to be a significant flaw when it comes to admissions?

Secondly, which looks worse: getting a B in math HL or taking math SL?

If math isn’t your thing, HL math will be nightmarish. It’s a huge step up from SL.

Now, I don’t work at Princeton or any college for that matter (hahaha!), but, “math not being one’s thing” probably isn’t something that will be held against them. Pick something else you’re good at. Just don’t make it be ITGS or Business.

Not sure what US colleges think of those but they are regarded as “soft” by some of the top UK universities, namely the LSE and some colleges within Cambridge. Business and ITGS would definitely not tick the “take most challenging courseload you can” box. History, philosophy, economics and English, for example, would.
