To IB students:

Hey IBers,

Here's a quick question: How bad does taking the IB math SL course (as opposed to math HL) look when it comes to admissions to really competitive schools (like columbia)? If math really isn't my thing, is taking math SL rather than HL going to be a big flaw when it comes to admissions?

Secondly, which looks worse: getting a B in math HL or taking math SL?

Thanks in advance!

I think it doesn’t matter what math you take as long as you take a full year of math. At my school, math sl is only one semester. I am taking AP calculus BC along with math SL.
Honestly, if math isn’t your thing, don’t take math HL. I hear they do some crazy intense things in that class.

I don’t think anything looks “worse”, just make sure you put your best effort in whatever you do!

I was accepted in the class of 2016 for engineering with SL Math. However I did take it as a junior, and it was the only advanced math course my school offered. But if your not interesting in a math related field I don’t think it is as important. Just don’t take math studies

It won’t hurt your application too much ~ but if you can take HL math I would really recommend you do so. For such a selective schools like Columbia they want you to take the most rigorous courses. Especially if you’re going to be applying to a math-related major.

However if you know you’re not going to be able to keep up in this class don’t take it. I’m taking HL math currently and am struggling a bit, it’s not an easy course.
