Hey IBers,

Here's a quick question: How bad does taking the IB math SL course (as opposed to math HL) look when it comes to admissions to really competitive schools (like Yale)? If math really isn't my thing, is taking math SL rather than HL going to be a significant flaw when it comes to admissions?

Secondly, which looks worse: getting a B in math HL or taking math SL?

Thanks in advance!

I personally have never participated in the IB program, but I can tell you that if you are a math person, you will not be harshly judged or anything like that just because you did not take the highest level of math available in lieu of something slightly easier. Most Yalies aren’t Math/Physics/Science majors and are Poly-Sci/International Relations and such things. Not everyone has to be perfect in all the subjects and you will not suffer just because Math isn’t high up in your list of proclivities. No worries. And if you are worried that your Math rigor in HS is weak, make sure to do well in the Math portions of your standardized testing to further validate that you are well-rounded and well-versed in Mathematics.

I’m an IB kid and personally, I think it would okay. I’m not taking HL and I plan to apply to Yale. As long as you have three other HL classes and are doing the Diploma then I think your fine. :)
