To parents of students going to sea for the first time

Email is a wonderful thing for keeping in contact with your midshipman. Tell him/her all kinds of newsy fun things going on. Keep them smiling. Do not however ever say anything that should not be read by others. Email on a ship is open for everyone.

If your midshipme emails you that he hates the captain, he may be left at the next port. So, keep the conversations light and encouraging.

This message should actually go for any email you send to the Academy as well. Although they are not looking at every little thing coming in and going out they do monitor them as they are on a government system.

Always great advice, KPmom. And particularly timely. Thanks.

My wife and I actually opened up "facebook" accounts to communicate

facebook is a great way to get to see pics from the mids while out at sea because we can dump everything there while in port and don't have to split it up into several e-mails. heck, even my grandmother has an account on there!

I can't guarantee that they will "accept" you as a friend but, you can still send them messages :)
