To Send or Not To Send?

Please provide your CC wisdom.

DS is applying to first/top tier colleges and 2nd/middle tier with competitive merit scholarships. He is trying to decide if he should include his SAT I scores since they are lower comparing to the rest. By the way, he is NOT planning on taking any more tests.

Which one would give him a better chance -
1. Sending all scores including the SAT I
OR
2. Sending ACT+SAT subject tests and NOT sending the SAT I scores.

His testing scores are:
ACT - composite 36, (writing 9) - took one time
SAT - 2260 (CR 730, Math 770, Writing 760, Essay 8) - took one time
SAT Subject Tests:
History - 800
Chemistry - 770
Math II - 760
World History - 800
Also, on the common application, he is self-reporting his four AP scores - all 5.

Thank you in advance for your thoughtful replies.

“Lower” is relative here. But honestly, for schools that do not require all scores, just send the ACT score and some of the subject tests. The ACT score is perfect, and the SAT I is not – not much below, but still…

I do think he might want to send 3 subject tests where he has the choice - History & World History are so closely related that it would help him to show strength in a math or science, so send along the Chem score. Some schools require the Math II, and his score is fine, so don’t sweat it if they require that one to be sent (in that case I would send all four of them if they request the Math II).

Hell – I would send all of his scores. Agree with intparent that “lower” is totally relative - there is nothing “lower” about his scores. To me, both show that he is naturally smart a good test taker. Yes, the SAT I scores are slightly lower than the ACT … but he took it one time. That shows the admissions offers a lot… as much as people say that it doesn’t matter if you take the ACT vs the SAT, I have still heard that some HS east coast schools place more weight on the SAT. And I agree with intparent - I would send all three SAT IIs, even if the school only asks for two. They show a great balance in both humanities and science. If your son’s resume shows passion and genuineness in his activities, he has a great future ahead of him!!!

intparent and momof2, thanks for your replies.
