What do you think?

in duhhhhh

Chibifry, thanks for the laugh. However, after her being deferred by Amherst last Saturday, we take nothing for granted.

Wow o_O Deferred by A..
Eep. Good luck! But seriously I'm sure Smith will say yes :D

If you were at least deferred by Amherst, you are definitely in at Smith. Smith is MUCH easier to gain acceptance to.

I agree, to Smith definitely.

If it helps, with similar stats I was rejected or waitlisted at a long list of college out of high school, but I was accepted at Smith. Then I was accepted to some very top schools as a sophomore transfer (I then blew it by last-minute choosing a college my parents wanted than not transferring at all, but that's another story)

In at Smith, Wellesley or MHC. Amherst may come through yet. You should also look at Dartmouth.

Thanks. I tried to convinve her to look at Dartmouth, but it is too far away (she says). We believe that Smith is a great fit for her, and she is quite happy with the choice. Now she just needs to get in!

{{Amherst may come through yet}}

She’s applying ED11. If accepted , she’ll have to withdraw her app. to Amherst.

Yes...she will be very happy to do that!

Why the need to go ED II? Why not just see what happens in March? I agree that an acceptance by Smith is very likely.

Why the need to go ED II? Because she is convinced that Smith is the place for her: Great sciences, and great dance. Just a perfect fit, really! She has also put in apps to Brown, Tufts, Brandeis, Wellesley; but Smith is her clear choice. Might as well just get it over with if she's that sure.

But what about Amherst? A week ago it was her clear first choice? I guess I would just let some time pass after the Amherst deferral before committing to another school. I think a regular decision acceptance from Smith is very likely.

I think she should be just fine. A possible advantage (though I wouldn't know for sure) is that the early application/acceptance might increase the possibility of your d. receiving a STRIDE, a paid research position, especially in the biology lab, which is quite competitive.

Good luck!

That is one of our hopes! Her getting a STRIDE would be great! I've been reading up on the subject, and it seems like a wonderful opportunity for research. Any chance for a Zollman? I'm pushing my luck, I know!

A sure thing.

[But what about Amherst? A week ago it was her clear first choice? I guess I would just let some time pass after the Amherst deferral before committing to another school.]

I’m inclined to agree with you. I’m married to a Smith alumna and my daughter is currently a student, so I have a personal appreciation and love for Smith.
BJM8’s daughter would be a fantastic addition, but I would hate to see her make such an important decision so soon after her disappointing deferral from Amherst.

Smith and Amherst are dissimilar in so many ways. If she was in love with Amherst, then I should think she would be more inclined to seek out a college such as Middlebury, Bowdoin et al. I’m wondering if she isn’t more enamored with the towns of Amherst and Northampton and the fact she can take courses at Amherst, Mt Holyoke, etc. than she is with Smith. Although those are very valid reasons for choosing Smith. It does give her a much wider range of courses to choose from, and the town of Northampton is fantastic (I lived in the area some years ago) Northampton is one of my favorite college towns in New England
In my daughter’s case, she wouldn’t consider Amherst but liked Dartmouth, Middlebury, Colgate, Smith, Wellesley, etc.
Yeah, I know, it made no sense. Amherst is similar to Middlebury, et al. I gave up trying to figure out why she liked or disliked certain colleges. She didn’t like My Holyoke because of the rural location but liked Colgate, Hamilton, and Dartmouth ..Go figger

[A sure thing.]

How can you say that? TheDad has repeated numerous times, Smith uses the scholarships to entice students they would otherwise loose to other colleges. With ED there is no incentive to offer anything, as the student is committed to attend. Why not save the scholarship so they can offer it to another student during RD and hopefully add another superior student?

edit: Maybe another good reason to appy RD

Smith has always been a very close second to Amherst in my Daughter's mind, and ours as well. As a matter of fact, there are many things about Smith that outweighed Amherst (dance for one). Since Amherst fell through, she is very ready to apply to her next love (Smith)! I think some of it is the area, but more importantly, it was the strong science and dance programs. We would not encourage her to apply ED II if we were not sure of her decision and the reasons behind it. We love Smith, just as much as we did Amherst. I think Amherst was her first choice, because she knew that Smith had an winter ED II. Kind of simplified things, as she knew Amherst was a reach. They are superselective, and all students who apply there must realize that they get in because they fit a particular admissions profile. Obviously, for some reason, my daughter did not. Smith clearly is her "other #1" and applying early makes sense to us! We just have been pretty humbled by the deferral, but it is what it is. Nothing more. Now about STRIDE?
