I'm an int'l student who abhors SAT reading section. Since my SAT score is 2120, I chose not to submit my SAT I score but only my TOEFL score, as MIT permits int'l students who have been speaking English for fewer than five years like me not to submit SAT I. But I think, although MIT provides this option, the option seems too tempting to be a part of criteria of the rigorous MIT admission. So, I suspect that choosing this option may rather harm my chance. According to an admission officer of MIT, "no option is preferred over the others." It probably means that MIT doesn't care whether you take SAT I or just TOEFL.

Right: MIT doesn’t care, and even if you submitted both SAT I and TOEFL scores, they would only use the score that made you look best in their evaluation.

Submitting only the TOEFL does not harm your application.

That sounds great, but it also means that there is wider range of int’l students who apply to MIT than that of those who apply to other competitive universities. Anyway, I will strive for getting higher SAT score. Thanks for nice information.

That’s kind of true. People in my country rarely apply to US colleges but there seems to be a lot of applicants for MIT. I guess that’s why MIT is more selective than other competitive universities for international students.

That’s why the acceptance rate of int’l students to MIT is only about 2~3%, and the admission is like buying a lottery. Nice part of this admission is that selection is not completely but sometimes random, so those who have never competed in IMO still have chance.

The real question here, that the Toefl is designed to help answer is whether an applicant can function in English, given that the large majority of classes at MIT are taught in English. Also the interview is very important to an international applicant submitted the TOEFL, as it will be conducted in English, and one of the things that international interviewers are specifically asked to evaluate is the ability of the applicant to function in English.
