I'm currently attending the college of William and Mary and I am really thinking about transfering to the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. The University of Manitoba is, I think, the only institution outside of Iceland that has an Icelandic program so I would be majoring in Icelandic. Here I was just going to major in anthropology and try to focus that around Iceland. Does anyone know the academic ruputation of the University of Manitoba? I don't think it will be nearly as competitive as W&M but I don't mind that. I plan on going to graduate school their as well and then trying to get a job at the University of Iceland. Anyways... what do you people think?

Well I might offend some people by saying this but imo opinion, Winnipeg is a hole. Honestly, I myself could not stand to live there for several years. And I'm from Saskatchewan. That said, it appears to be the only school that offers your major which I think is a big bonus. I don't think the universit of manitoba is that respected worldwide but maybe it is in regards to that program. They do have some interesting stuff happening at that university to be fair. But you have to be prepared for the social aspect of it as well. I doubt many will live on campus, a large part of the population will be Manitobans. Why not the university of iceland?

My main problem with the University of Iceland is the fact that most classes are taught in Icelandic when I really can't speak it yet. There are some English classes and classes for english speaking students that would help me learn Icelandic however I think I would be very lost with the other classes until I picked up the language more. The University of Manitoba's worldwide reputation isn't that much of an importance for me because I think it is respected enough in Iceland (there is currently a deal with the University of Iceland that allows for Professors and students to transfer from university to university if I understand correctly).

Your comments about Winnipeg are kind of startling though. What makes the city so bad? I haven't actually visited the campus yet so some insight would be appreciated. I don't mind not living on campus and I think city life would be much better than where I am currently, however if Winnipeg is such a bad place maybe I wouldn't...

so, uh, why do you want to study iceland??!

to be honest, i think going to a better school (W & M) would serve you better since it'll be easier to get jobs etc...

I want to move to Reykjavik and live their. I'm highly interested in the Icelandic culture and language so I think it would be the best major for me. Studying in Iceland, I think would give me the best job opportunities in Iceland.

Thats understandable and I'm sure you've given it a lot of thought. The plus is manitoba will be a LOT cheaper for you to attend. Winnipeg is.....well Manitoba in general is a very poor province, just like saskatchewan. Large space with a small population and not the greatest premier's. This means that there is a lot of crime issues. Winnipeg is a very multicultural city but it has a lot of problems. There will be a student life but it's not really at all comparable to an american university. It won't be campus based. It has a poor infrastructure and in winter....it's cold and very dreary. And winter lasts about 6 months. So you need to be prepared for these things. It's not a pretty city. That said, there is nothing greater than going to a university and being inspired by your major and your profs and fellow students who have those same feelings.
