To those who got in: Is BC your first choice?

Dear Duncan : Two years back, we faced a final decision - Williams versus Boston College and chose Boston College for several reasons. Let’s deal with the non-academic issues first.

To get to Williams campus is a 45 minute ride from any interstate and while somewhat picturesque, it is actually not a ride through great areas and not somewhere to run out of gas. Boston College in Chestnut Hill has all the access you need to major transportation (air, train, car) while also being in a wonderful suburban environment.

Next, once you arrive at Williams, you had better know someone with a car to get you to town if needed - unless you go to the small stores across campus. Boston College just has access to more stores nearby.

The campus size (2200 total versus 9000 total) gives the two a completely different feel although one consistent point is the campus involvement in sports and activities.

Dining is better at Boston College just because there is more choice given the broader population. Also, family visits are easier with more hotel space in the local area than you have at Williams.

Drinking culture is reported more often at Williams (perhaps due to remoteness) and the rash of “poo incidents” in the residence halls were a real turn-off despite their entry system.

Turning to academics, both are great schools and certainly Williams is among the top three or four liberal arts colleges nationwide. The Williams tutorial system (two students, one professor) seems to be a real gift to challenge yourself. The faculties are both excellent.

The Williams alumni network is strong and vibrant as they have only had about 25,000 graduates in campus history - so the school looks after itself from that perspective.

In closing, the benefits of BC outweighed the benefits of Williams. Hopefully, we made the right choice and the right choice has come your way also. Good luck.

BC is not my Daughter’s first choice however she got waitlisted at her first choice UVA–very difficult year.

scottj- After reading your post I’ve been reminded of the reasons that I am infinitely grateful for my acceptance at Boston College. I tell people (including one of my friends who just got rejected yesterday) that I’m actually happy I was rejected ED at Williams-- like you said, its so remote I would be missing out largely on cultural diversity and city life.

The academics are both superb though, and a student at BC would thrive as much as one at Williams (if they try to, at least). So anyone who was accepted to BC- congrats! Its an achievement.

carsonee…I just don’t understand why you feel the need to be so obnoxious. Nobody really cares that BC was a safety school for you, they are much more interested in the stats/6th tab. The only reason you through that it was your safety school was to boost your ego. Because if it wasn’t, then please tell me what the point was of only saying that it was your safety.

Carsonee is just a ■■■■■.

Is BC really that overwhelmingly white? That’s a downside, IMO…And no, it’s not my daughter’s first choice- Tufts is.

^^ That’s exactly what I’m worried about. Even if it is a super majority, I hope that the races mix because I don’t want to be lumped in with every other minority.

Where I grew up I mixed around with everyone.

P.S. Westernhills, that’s my top as well. It seems that way for a lot of people! Good luck!! I’ll def. need it :)

My D was accepted into Carroll School of Management. BC is ABSOLUTELY her first choice!

it was kinda like my safety/target…i’m thrilled to have gotten in but it’s definitely not my first choice. i doubt i’m goin to GET IN my RD first choice but i wish for a miracle lol. tho i’m expecting a couple straight rejections to come. soon. :/

and i worry about the diversity as well. it’s not nearly as diverse as i would want my school to be…

Because if it wasn’t, then please tell me what the point was of only saying that it was your safety.

Sorry for communicating really badly… The “it was my safety” was basically saying, no, it wasn’t my first choice at all. Last on the list. The reason why I said I was embarrassed is because I felt bad for those people on here (like some of my friends) might have had bc as a first choice but didn’t get in. Although it might have been a bad practice, I didn’t really put much thought into chosing a safety school so I felt bad for those whose first choice was bc. If that still doesn’t make sense, please don’t respond to this and just go back to thinking about tabs.

Oh, I apologize for declaring you a ■■■■■, Carsonee. My apologizes for my rash judgement, but you did sound like a ■■■■■ for the moment…

Carsonne, just because a school is last on your list doesn’t essentially mean that it’s your “safety.” I agree with a reply, that BC isn’t a safety for anyone.

You never know with college decisions.

To OP:

That is EXACTLY how I feel! My decision to apply to BC was very capricious–my mother even told me I was going to be flat out rejected. However, I was one of the few that actually got in from my school. I just got into another school with a better program at a cheaper price than BC’s, so I feel bad turning it down when kids I know who considered BC a dream school got waitlisted :-/

BC was my dream school, and i got deferred EA… it was the last school i heard from & i got in!!! today =) so yes, it’s my first choice. i guess good things do come to those who wait

anyone who is accepted at BC and doesnt want to go, reply quickly so i can get in on the waiting list.

BC is not my first choice. I applied only because I was curious whether I can get in (I considered BC a reach), but I never really had any hope in it. So now that I got accepted to CSOM, I’m enormously happy and proud of myself, but I still don’t consider going. Good luck to everyone on the WL.

Why would you apply to a reach school that you wouldn’t want to go to?

I hope for your sake you’re not going to BU over BC.

^^
I second that. I don’t think any sane human being with a semi-functional cerebral cortex will choose BU over BC.

I SERIOUSLY doubt BU stands for Boston U.

espn, because - as I stated above - I was curious if I could get in.

And yes I am choosing BU over BC and if any of you has a problem with that, well I don’t really care. It looks like we won’t be attending the same schools so it works out fine for all of us, kthxbye.

Dear Hanita : Regarding your comments - * And yes I am choosing BU over BC and if any of you has a problem with that, well I don’t really care.*

Understand that espn’s reaction is a reaction that many folks would think if not document. As your location setting specifies “Prague–>BU”, I would suppose that you have given this decision plenty of thought and that you have visited both campuses to make an informed decision. Good luck to you in your pursuit of your bachelor’s degree at BU.
