Hey! I currently attend Ball State University and requested a transfer application to Indiana University. I did this because IU is ranked for English (English major here) and I would be able to commute.

The thing is I have made a lot of friends that weren't necessarily easy to make here at BSU. Plus I love (love (love)) living away from home. If I went to IU, I'd probably commute. One other thing is that linguistics isn't a separate major from English, and I love linguistics.

I'm considering going into academia and am worried if I stay at BSU I wouldn't be accepted into any good graduate schools. I'm also worried that if I don't go to grad school I wouldn't be able to get a good job (like an English major can find a job, ha) because I went to BSU.

Thanks in advance. Sorry if this is unclear.

I guess what I'm asking is how big of a deal is it that I'm getting a degree from BSU than IU?

-Alex

Why don’t you think that you will be accepted to a good grad school from BSU?

Thanks for responding so quickly!

I think that because BSU is just not as good of a school as IU.

If you’re happy where you are, and are transferring mostly for prestige reasons, I’d advise rethinking it. If you do well at BSU, the lack of prestige will be made up for. If your grades are good, you have extracurriculars, and have good relationships with professors who can write you outstanding recommendations, I don’t think they should be discounted solely on the basis of a name.

However. If you decide not to go to graduate school, there might be more reason to transfer, since it will matter a little more when applying for jobs. But if you’re happy and you’re doing well, I think that–especially since you don’t want to live so close to home–you’d be better off not transferring. The reasons you’ve listed for wanting to stay at BSU are pretty convincing. Of course, I am not you, and you understand your situation best–this is just my take on it. I hope things work out for you, regardless of where you choose to end up! :)

Edit: question. What do you mean that linguistics isn’t a separate major from English? Is this at Ball State or Indiana?

Linguistics is a separate major at IU and it’s combined with English at BSU. Thanks for replying.
