TOEFL Requirements for UIUC?

Hello,

I am an international student, looking to study engineering in UIUC. The website says that they recommend toefl or ielts, but don’t require it. So i have 1 questions.

  1. To what extent does TOEFL play a role in your UIUC application. Does it make a big difference if I have a toefl score?
  2. If I have a decent score in the SAT Reading and Writing Section (Above 600), then would not taking the toefl affect my application?
