Hi.I'm an international student that will be applying this coming Sept 1(Freshman).I'm from Malaysia actually and English is not my native language.I am planning to major in Computer Science.

According to UIUC web, those who wants to study Comp Sci(its under College of Engineering) will need at least 560 on SAT CR part or TOEFL iBT at least 100..If I don't meet the requirements, does that mean I can't apply?

I actually have very excellent grades(I excel in Math and Sciences particularly Physics).I don't really know what's my GPA here coz I don't know how they convert my grades to US High School grades.

Anyway,back to the question,am I eligible to apply?Like I mean,would I definitely be rejected?

I’m not too sure, but I think they have English proficiency lessons for undergraduates who do not fulfill the language requirement. The classes are in July and August, before actual university starts. Again, not too sure about it. I have a vague memory of reading this somewhere, though.

Judging from the level of English proficiency of your post and having visited Malaysia many times (so I know that English is widely spoken there), I see no reason why you would not get a reasonable score on the TOEFL.

Why don’t you go get yourself a TOEFL study guide book from a bookstore and prepare yourself to take the test.

Actually I just finished my TOEFL like 3 hours ago.Everything was good except the speaking section.I think I screwed up that section.I am not confident I can get 100+…I think I’ll lose a lot from the Speaking section.

I was hoping that UIUC offers English classes for those who do not fulfill the required score.I have sent an email to UIUC.Still waiting for a reply :)

TOEFL scoring is pretty lenient (or so I feel), so getting a 100+ should not be too difficult. Even I felt like I’d messed up the speaking, but my score turned out all right in the end. Did you go to an English speaking school? If you did, then you’ll almost certainly get more than 100. If not, there’s still a good possibility of getting a good score. Best of luck!
