hm, got a 114 on the ibt version, 120 was max, didn´t like the test either.. especially the listening was just plain boring, that´s where i got my worst score:

listening 25/ 30
reading 29/ 30
speaking 30/ 30
writing 30/ 30

I'm glad they included speaking. I consider that to be the most important part of telling whether someone knows English or not. If someone were to speak to me face-to-face, there would be no doubt in their mind that I'm fluent in English and taking this stupid test would be totally unnecessary.

Speaking and writing. Someone who can speak English fluently may not be capable of writing at the college level. Most colleges now require a freshman writing course which can be very tough if you don't have the proper writing skill.

Yeah, but the TOEFL doesn't even come close to testing real college level writing. The questions are way too simple and usually aren't targeted at academic topics. If they want to see someone's writing ability, they should look at SAT/ACT essays, college essays or even ask for a writing sample (research/creative paper), which many colleges do.

That's right. You should get a "6" on your essay easily, or at least a "5.5". But I've seen students scoring 4 or below ... a good indication they may need an ESL course to bridge.

Many colleges are skeptical about the new SAT Writing and not counting it this year. I agree it is a better benchmark of your writing skill.

i got a 5 on my toefl essay! i don't think my writing is tht bad! my SAT scores were decent.

They don't have CBT in Vietnam so I had to take the PBT.
670 with 5.0 on the essay...

but TOEFL isn't very important in the admissions process, right?

Of course. TOEFL is so darned easy. They really don't have to let the applicants to take such piece of cake.

The benchmark for english speaking should be watching the Godfather. If you can understand what everyone is saying, you're all set. Plus you would have a watched a classic in the process.

i got total 250/300 possible on the computer test hmm and a 6.0 in my essay :D im applying ed to cornell i find out in dec 15th!!!!!:)!!
fingers crossed

Pffft...try watching something more challenging. Like understanding what the heck "The Architect" was saying in the second Matrix.

Hey, so a 100 for iBT would be really bad then. I screwed up my Reading Part, just could not concentrate on the screen that long... The speaking was stupid too. I'm studying full-time in an English environment and have no problem while i didnt score full mark for Speaking -> lol . I didnt have enough time to talk. It was very boring...
Anyway, Do you really think that 100 is bad? How is it when talking about Ivies?

100 iBT is equivalent to 250 CBT, isn't it? As long as you have a decent essay score and don't get any real low subscores, you met the minimum requirement for most elite schools including the Ivies. You passed.

You will be evaluated based on your SAT and subject tests ... not on your TOEFL.

I got a 297 without even preparing which is quite odd since I scored 680 on the CR... and I know people who got 750+ but got like 250 on the toefl. after reading toefl prep books! obviously you can't draw parallels b/n the two tests, not only is the sat ridiculously harder, it's much more about memorizing hard vocabulary (at least for int'ls) and quick reading. and toefl is just simple alertness, spotting very obvious mistakes. and patience for all the stupid tutorials, ugly pictures and boring texts.
btw, does anybody here know how to send scores? I'm more eager to fax them since a phone call would be frickin expensive, but I don't know what exactly to fax. the ETS site tells you to print some form and they give a link, but the request "form" is just so messed up, it's not even pdf, it comes out as two sheets, the boxes are very small and the print is just too light. and it's not my printer...
should I fill out and fax the score report they've sent me? can anyone who's also faxing help? I hate mail and I really want to save that $17 phone report fee.

Although there isn't a seperate PDF version for ordering more score reports, that particular form is also there in the Toefl Bulliten which is in PDF. So download that. Its around 2 MB...

OMG. ETS really sucks at customer service. actually, the whole ****nig toefl concept sucks....

I hear you.

Man, if that ain't the truth.

I called and said, "Look, I'm an American expat in Japan. Isn't there a faster way to get in touch with you?"

"Err...little secret. Email takes weeks."

"Oh boy, gotta love customer service."

"Hey, it takes me a week just to contact my supervisor via email. You're screwed."

You can make an international phone call to some ETS office and key in your credit card details, after which the computer will process your score report automatically.
