what is a good paper based score for ivies?

I'm assuming 670? 667? (It's out of 677, right?)

TOEFL test was a joke in terms of difficulty. If you had lived in an English speaking country for at the very least 1 year, you should not have any problems acing the test. Before coming to the US, I enrolled in a TOEFL preparation test. We did a some sort of simulation test every week, and I barely broke the 200 score barrier. Last January (after about 2.5 years living in the state), I took the real test because the University I applied to required so, without any specific preparation, and I got 277. And no, I wasn't a freshman that was taking any English composition courses at the time. In fact, at the time, the last English class I took was about a year before I took the TOEFL test. So, I hadn't written any serious paper for about a year before I took the test (and still got a darn decent score). No wonder they finally revise the test. The old one was too easy. Now, SAT Writing is a completely different beast...

So what is your point? You've been living in the States for 2.5 years, presumably enrolling in high school. And you have taken TOEFL prep classes before. You are supposed to do well in TOEFL.

TOEFL is easy for people who are good in English. However, it is supposed to be a screening test for people learning English as a second language. I've seen many students here barely breaking 213 even though they've been learning English for 12 years in school.

I agree TOEFL is a waste of time and money for people who are proficient in English. Colleges should allow international applicants with high SAT verbal and writing scores to be exempted from taking TOEFL. However, there are many more who need to demonstrate basic English proficiency to ensure that they will be successful at the college level.

sorry for writing out of turn but i just wanted to post my TOEFL scores....i got a 290 with 6 in the essay!!....and like many others here i went with no prep.....infact i just did one of the practice tests...damn i am lazy!!

GoBlue81, I didn't mean to sound arrogant at all. If that's what you think, then I apologize. And now that I read my post again, you're right, it doesn't seem to have any point. I was just pis***s*ed that I had to spend another 110 bucks to waive the ESL requirement, despite the fact that I had been in a community college for more than a year at that time.

I don't think the test should be any indication of one's English proficiency. I did pretty well in TOEFL, but only got 610 in SAT II writing test. And I'm not that good in English classes either (I got C+ on the college level English composition course). Ah well, enough of my ramble...

I got a 650 toefl paper based score. How much is that as a computer based toefl score?

niether TOEFL or SAT is accurate.
TOEFL is too easy I got 297 without studying...anyone who can speak English can ace TOEFL given s/he stays awake...
on the other hand...i got only 580 on CR cuz I don't know vocabs...you need to memorize vocabs and you'll do well....

I think 650 PBT is around 270 CBT? Maybe 250?

really? I thought it's a 280- 290 .. :o

The PBT is out of 677 max, right? I would have taught 667 would be in the 280-300 range...

But it doesn't really matter so long as the school's cut off minimum, (if they state they have one for TOEFL), is 650 or longer for PBT.

How long did it take you guys to get your scores? I took mine Dec 14, and I still don't know (got the range, though). Should I be worried?

hahah yea
you definitely have to stay awake.,,

I fell asleep in the middle of the listening/reading section too!

well.. not practically asleep, but more like dozed off...

and bookgirl-I think i got my score in about 2 weeks or so. just wait a little more since it's christmas/new year season when all the people send something to each other.

I got mine 3 weeks after, in August.

the toefl is pure BS... i really hated the listening comprehension section cuz it was so loonnng... and i'm sorry but they really should've used different narrators - all the narrators had the same annoyingly slow tone that made me want to go to sleep. you won't find many people who talk like that in college

yeah...I had a terrible headache during the listening section, almost got asleep, cause I had previousle taken a pill to ease my ache ..... so when I read the questions, I was like: did I really listen to that stuff????? :o got a lousy 27 on the listening part. anyway....waiting for my scores too. I took the exam dec 21st. I should get them by next week, or something like that. I hope :)

I worked PBT on 19th - November and the results hasn't arrived yet...

Oh dear God...
