TOEFL Trouble !!

I am studyin for the TOEFL using the Kaplan book... i took a practice test and got 35 correct out of 39 on reading and 32 out of 34 on listening..... will this be enuf 2 get a good score ... i am aiming for the ivies ... thnx ....

you should know kaplan's study guides are easy!
if you can get 37/39 and 32/34 on barron's then you are set

Your toefl score doesn't matter as long as you're above the requirement. It's seen as either pass or non-pass.

Newbyreborn : I am takin that into consideration i ll try 2 get a Barron's 2 ...
Thomas: really ? I don't think so

If you had used the board search or Google you would've found countless threads about TOEFL scores and how they are seen by admission offices ;)

You are usually required to submit SAT scores, that's the main reason the TOEFL score is pass/non-pass. It doesn't tell anything about your academic skills either.

For practice, you can use the official TOEFL practice test on the internet. That should be sufficient, at least it was for me.

well its good if it is that way .....
Is the official test free ??

U mean the official TOEFL test? Or just the official practice test?

the official practice test .... i checked out the site and it isn't free. Man these ETS guys are a bunch o f crooks

yeah they are. they removed the cbt toefl (which, mind you, you could give any time in the year) and replaced it with the stupid ibt, complete with a speaking section (which most universities don't need anyway), held only a few times every month, and they don't even have the decency to provide a free practice test!

luckily i don't have to give the toefl; the moment i saw about the ibt i contacted all my universities to see if i could apply without the toefl and they all said ok.

It is free. http://toeflpractice.ets.org/

No, there is one free sample test, but you need to sign up for the TOEFL iBT first in order to access it. Go to http://toeflpractice.ets.org/ and follow the link "Free Sample Test" in the right-hand column.

haha dun worry, as long as you get a 600 and above in SAT reasoning, you're bound to exceed the 250 requirement (for cbt) and surely over 100 for iBt. Dun worry so much, i just read through an old toefl book in my library (and the cd is missing) without listening... be sure to understand the format and the trick in the test~ good luck!!

TOEFL = money-suckers. Even more than College Board. I haven't had a pleasant experience with them.

I registered for the TOEFL CBT, paid the fee, and arrived at the test center. A guy in glasses speaking like Agent Smith from the Matrix said "Um...your middle names(I have two) are reversed on the registration form as opposed to on your passport..."

I replied.."Oh,,well, they're the same thing."
He says: "Sorry... we can't let you take this test because of our rules and regulations yadayadayada"
I reply: "But isn't it obvious that these names are exactly the same?"
Him: "But as I said before, we can't let you take the test without proper identifications..."
Me: "Is there a refund?"
Him: "Sorry, at this point we cannot do refunds."
Me: "Thank you. "
I left the test center completely ****ed off at these people. They just have no common sense. I understand that it's an official test and whatnot, but what the heck's up with the no-refund thing? Just can't believe the inflexibility of these people.

What I find more ridiculous is the fact that I even need to take this test...I have been educated at an international American school for fourteen years, I am nearly native level in terms of English proficiency. I will probably contact all the universities and colleges I'm applying to in order to nullify the TOEFL requirements.

i just took the toefl ibt today.

if you're already used to english or have taken english classes already in the past, i'd say don't sweat it too much. you just need to brush up on your grammar and pronounciation. i'd say i had the most difficult time in speaking though

@ Haru07 ......... u DON'T need to take the test...

I'm worried. How difficult is to get 100 or higher on TOEFL?

It's definetely doable.
I recall someone saying that if you are able to read on this board, the TOEFL shouldn't be an obstacle.

I cant generalize here...............as I hav given IELTS(equivalent to TOEFL),I had a difficulty in the speaking module.......(as I dont use english that fequently...)...else was all fine..

yeah. speaking is killing me. Can it be compared to SAT? The time given to answer is more generous in TOEFL than that in SAT.

Here u r,ur name implies.."I HATE CR" isnt it?............TOEFL is compared to SAT's CR section........if u get 600+ in CR,then ur TOEFL can be waived...
