I have a friend who came to USA when he was 13 years old(almost 4 years ago).He is in the same grade as me(junior). He took the SAT and he has a good gpa.His SAT scores are average(he got the same english results as me 490 on CR and 480 in writing).Does he have to take TOEFL since he took SAT and he is not an exchange student

PS-he started High school in USA and he is going to graduate from high school in USA also

He needs to ask this question for each and every college and university that he applies to.

Some will waive the TOEFL because he has completed HS entirely in the US.

Some would waive the TOEFL only if he had five or more full years in English language schools.

Some will never waive it for an international/immigrant applicant who does not have English as his/her first language.

Some will accept another test (IELTS or Michigan or their own in-house exam) instead of the TOEFL.

He should go to the library and check out a copy of some TOEFL prep materials. One TOEFL prep teacher that I know recommends the Barrons and Cambridge guides. I’ve only seen the Barrons material, but it looks really good. The listening, writing, and speaking activities on the TOEFL iBT are based on real activities that you will encounter in college such as note-taking during a lecture, or a conversation with your professor or a college administrator. It is not all boring grammar stuff.

The biggest challenge with TOEFL is getting an exam date for the iBT. Your friend might want to look around for colleges/universities near you that still offer the paper-based test once or twice a year. I’ve been told that it is easier to get a seat for one of their exam dates. But that might just be a rumor. Test-taking strategies for the paper-based test and for the iBT are different so your friend will need to know which exam he is going to take to be sure that he chooses the right way to prep for the exam.

He doesn’t need to take TOEFL is he graduated from a US university

I did, I’m foreign, I has the same question cause but schools were like “Oh no, you’re fine.”

He is still in High school but he is going to graduate from it and he is going to go to US college also
