Tokyo Olympics

We were supposed to be there last year - had tickets for several events. So disappointed that we can’t go. We will watch a bit of everything (except I don’t watch wrestling or boxing). I find some of the more obscure sports interesting.

Oh yes, they love the “fluff” on NBC and the “touching personal stories.” Personally, a little goes a long way for me with these kinds of things…

We like gymnastics too and I feel the same way about the commentating. Also, I hate how NBC barely shows the gymnasts from other countries. I get that NBC is an American news company, but come on! Part of the fun and thrill of watching the competition is seeing the athletes from other countries. I want to know how to the Russian team is doing compared to the Americans. I want to see who the competition is!

@tkoparent I want to try to watch at least some of the new sports. I’m not really interested n any of them, but I want to see how they play out!

I think the Russian team is still banned from the 2021 Summer Olympics because of the massive doping issues at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

I think only certain athletes are banned and the ones that do compete compete under another name…

They will participate under the flag of the Russian Olympic Committee, not Russia itself. If they win a gold, they won’t play the Russian national anthem. Only athletes not found to have doped can go.

I understand around 335 athletes are going from the ROC, whereas something like 600 or so are going from the US.

Heck they barely show the American gymnasts when it’s not a world comp. When it’s a domestic competition they pick their faves and show them even when they’re just standing around rather than showing all the women. It’s very frustrating to have to track down YouTube videos.

You’re right and it’s so annoying! I’m not saying thy have to show every gymnast and every single routine, but it would be nice for them to not just show the same 4 or so gymnasts.

Oh and I feel the exact same way about how they show gymnasts just standing around! I wanna see action…I love Simone Biles, but I don’t need to see her standing around, especially when they could show other gymnasts competing…
Oh and one Olympics my H got annoyed because they showed the gymnasts getting off the bus and arriving at the arena…do they think we need to know that the gymnasts arrived safely at the venue?

There are other channels beside NBC where you can get more Olympic coverage.

Why do people not like Nastia Liukin? She was a great gymnast who continues to be involved in the sport. She has a foundation that assists gyms affected by Covid. Who would you have instead? Agree about Tim Dagget—time for new blood.

Honestly, she’s just not very likeable. She’s evolved from someone my gymnast daughter waited hours to see for an autograph into someone we mute when she’s commentating. She seems very much to want things to stay as they were in gymnastics- she has never seemed to be genuinely sympathetic to victims and she blew off accusations against her dad. I wonder if they’re grooming Laurie to replace her? I wouldn’t mind a whole new team, tbh.

Tokyo in a state of emergency…it’s possible that no spectators will be allowed at the Olympics:

Just a mess. I feel awful for so many sides of this. The athletes, the planning committee, the people who hoped to attend and first and foremost, those who are affected by the rise in covid numbers.

Apparently, now official: no spectators at the Tokyo Olympics:

My biggest complaint with NBC coverage (I guess all American major networks) is their only showing medal ceremonies for events where there is a US gold medal winner. Back in the day, it was so interesting to hear all the different national anthems. Now it’s the Star Spangled Banner over and over and over……and usually not a very good version of it….

I may be in the minority, but I have NO use for all the human-interest stories. I get it, they do that to keep the casual fan interested, but I’m looking forward to using my cable system (Comcast is owned by NBC-or vice versa) to pick and choose what I watch, in order to see game/match action, not listen to a sob story worthy of an episode of America’s Got Talent (also a product of NBC, BTW).

I’m the same way; I’d rather see fewer stories and more actual competition.

Make me three! I want to see athletes compete (an occasional story here and there is OK, but NBC is going over the top in this department!). Oh yeah, AGT. The personal stories crept in there, too. They used to show many more acts in the early days of the AGT…

Hmm, reading these recent posts makes me wonder whether maybe NBC’s strategy is actually off. I also find all the breakaway stories very distracting. I think the Japanese broadcasters have smaller budgets to work with, so here we get more sports, less human interest, which is fine for me. I was looking forward to being able to watch a few events in person, but now that’s not going to happen (probably the right decision, but still . . .). As a Jersey girl, I am very excited that Jessica Springsteen has made the Olympic equestrian jumping team!

More competition less bio stories for me too. I’m sure they all have a story, so send us to a website where where we click and listen, if we desire.
