Tokyo Olympics

I was doing a little looking to see if there are details about the opening ceremonies. I know there won’t be general spectators, but will there be limits in the # of athletes can participate? Will the traditional “march” still occur?

Can’t find any definitive info - and understand that could still change - what have you heard regarding the opening?

Not very detailed, but from NBC: How to watch the Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo Olympic Games

Yes I saw that - thanks - still a little vague.

He’s playing, just not for the USA!

I love the Olympics! I’m a runner so I’m looking forward to track events as well as gymnastics (Simone!) and swimming.

My favorite moment was in 2012 when a young man who grew up in the neighborhood next to ours (yes we know him and his family) won a gold medal in swimming! I was screaming at the TV! There is a person on the swim team this year who attended HS with S.

Do you have an update to this article?

I just heard yesterday (on a Denver news station) that Jokic was playing.

Looks like Serbia’s big rival (Croatia) has three NBA players on its Olympic team.

Australia and Nigeria, the first two games that Team USA lost in exhibitions, have I believe 5 (+/-) NBA players each.

I wouldn’t disrespect the rest of the world. It’s not going to be easy for Team USA Basketball.

I have absolutely no interest in watching the Olympics. I figure most people who win a medal in anything athletic are taking some kind of performance-enhancing drug.

The back stories make the Olympics unwatchable for me. Is it sports coverage, or a TMZ/Access Hollywood human-interest story show??? Can’t decide which one it wants to be. Then again, dear wife watches for those stories, for her sports are secondary.

I guess she’s the target audience, not me, the sports fan.

And don’t forget marijuana too. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

That’s a strong take. Even if the athlete can get by the stringent Olympic testing, who cares?

Cheating is not new in athletics, business, education or pretty much anything in life.

I stopped competing in powerlifting because it got to the point where I’d mostly be competing against guys taking steroids. Lots of people aren’t going to take up a sport if they know they have to take drugs to be successful.

Funny you should mention powerlifting. I’m a member of USPA and they do offer “drug tested” events/meets. I’ve actually got a meet coming up in October, but I guess I don’t care if I win or lose. I’m just doing it for fun. Just like races that I do. It’s not for the money, trophies or medals. I just love competing.

Athletes cheat, but not all of them. I’ve been watching the Tour De France on TV. I’ll bet most riders cheat to some degree, but for me, the assumption that some/many cheating doesn’t detract from watching (or participating) sports on TV.

Different strokes. Half empty vs half full.

I will be happy to enjoy them. That kind of a blanket statement is an insult to the many athletes who do not indulge.

Blame the athletes who cheat for making all the clean athletes look bad. It’s impossible to tell the difference.

“If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying.” Tom Brady, Barry Bonds, Richard Petty, Lance Armstrong, Houston Astros, Gaylord Perry, Arnold Schwarzenegger, woof, there’s lots of cheaters in sports history. But it won’t stop me from watching sports.

If Simone Biles is cheating, using arguably the greatest athlete in history as an example, then I don’t care, she’s an amazing gymnast. She hasn’t lost an all-around competition since 2013 (8 years!). Do I think she’s cheating? No, of course not.

A US tennis player and two women’s gymnastics alternates have tested positive and are out of commission.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I hope there is a strict protocol of sample collection, and test samples are blinded so there is no way the technicians running the test could know what team is being tested. Unlike doping testing, a false positive Covid test can put an athlete out of commission just prior to their event, and it could be too late for any confirmatory tests to clear the athlete.

In terms of the gymnasts, which I’ve been following more closely, they were tested at least four times each. They’re also alternates, so not the main team.
