Tokyo Olympics

Hmmm

Some contradictory stories on my Comcast home page. One talks about the Norwegian womens beach volleyball team. They were penalized for not playing in bikini bottoms. They wore what looked like spandex pants that went halfway above the knee. Of course, the Norwegians mens team wears baggy shorts.

Other story was about a Para-olympics womens track team member (she has cerebral palsy) who was told her track briefs were “inappropriate”. Yeah, they’re short, but no shorter than what everyone else wears.

So one team’s garb isn’t provocative enough, while another’s athlete’s is too provocative.

Ugh. Who cares?

The Norwegian team was fined by a European track organization. The paraolympian was just ‘noted’ that her briefs were really brief.

I think we’re talking about the Norwegian women’s BEACH handball (not v-ball) team being fined.

Anyone know why bikini bottoms are required?

Good question; beach volleyball changed their uniform requirements in 2012, although many choose to compete in bikini bottoms (guessing sand in bike shorts would be really chaffing). Beach Handball? Not sure why they didn’t vote to offer the same option of choice. Guessing many would still choose to compete in bikini bottoms, but IMO that really should be their choice as the shorts would not offer any athletic advantage.

US Women’s soccer team was beaten by Sweden 3-0! Prior to this, have won their last 23 games and tied one. Puts them in a tough spot to get to the next round.

I find the requirements for attire on beach volleyball and I guess handball ridiculous and sexist. There is no athletic purpose that I can think of.

The beach volleyball women can wear shorts; they choose to wear a bikini. Most prefer them for movement and staying cool on a hot beach.

Yay! Hope there is no pandemic in 2032!! I always wanted to visit Australia, so that would be a good excuse to finally do this.

I just heard about that! Brisbane is supposed to be a fun city! I enjoyed watching the olympics back in 2000 when they were in Sydney, so it’ll be fun to watch the olympics in another Australian city! Good for Australia!

When H and I were newly married, were living in LA during the 1984 Olympics. We got to see the volleyball thanks to tickets that H got through work. We also got to see the bicycle racing which took place right around the corner from where my in laws lived. We took our beach chairs up there and watched from the sidewalk! The marathon went by where I worked at and we watched a bit of it from the office.
At my office, they had a drawing for tickets to events, but my name didn’t get drawn.
My BIL was lucky and he got tickets through work to the gymnastics prelims. They got to see Mary Lou Retton! We also had friends who got to go to the opening ceremonies!

Thanks, I just read that changed in 2012.

We’re watching badminton and rowing. I’m not a fan of the opening or closing ceremonies.

She is the most inspiring gymnast ever and I’m both excited to watch her again and sad it’s her last go-round. She is actually coached by one of her former teammates and her child is older than most of her fellow competitors. She’s a total bad butt.
