Tony nominations!

Oh-And Legally Blonde????? PUH-LEASE. Somebody had to have major connections.

Raphael.

Raul was great.

If you can believe it... Company was darker than Sweeney Todd. Company is one of Sondheim's funniest shows... (aside from Forum) Bobby is searching for love and doesn't know how to find it. He has a lot of "good and crazy people, my married friends" who we get to know during the show. They are his role models. Bobby is confused.....Bobby is not a suicidal basket case.

This production sucked all joy whatsoever out of the book. Everyone was in black walking round and round this elevated cube...over and over.... round and round.....He even put the bride in Im Not Getting Married Today in black. It was really awful.

Again, Raul would have been a GREAT Bobby in another production.

Just my opinion. Anyone else see it?

I saw 'Company' and LOVED Raul, not the production, despite it being one of my favorites. However I do believe that because of the politics it will win Best Revival. They let Roundabout take it over Sondheim last year, very unlikely they will do it again unfortunatley.

TomBFACoach--
I saw Company also. It's not one of my favorites to begin with, so this was pretty painful. The sound was BEYOND amplified--in addition to loud, there was a deliberate, constant reverb. Like a bad dream. I wonder if this was part of "the concept." It was two-dimensional, flat in affect, and otherwise forgettable (I forgot everyone wore black!), except for Raul's extraordinarily moving performance at the end. As I write this, I feel like the whole thing thus makes sense, but I'm not sure that sitting through 2 hours (approximately) of numbness to get 7 minutes (approximately) of feeling is worth it. And, maybe part of why Raul was so great at the end is that his performance--this character's behavior--is in stark contrast to everything that precedes it.

My favorite thing (not raindrops on roses) about Spring Awakening: the choreography. really.

Am I the only one who thought the second act of Grey Gardens was very slow and lacked interest? I was fascinated with the story, and I realize that the pace coincided with what was happening in the story, but I still felt it was lacking. :-)

Enjoyed Spring Awakening, although I'd like to see it a second time when I won't be so caught off-guard about some of the scenes. Really enjoyed the sets and music, and the intensity of the actors.

solely :^)

Solely! THANKS!! I knew "soley" looked weird! wow--that's a hard one. Is it in SPELLING BEE? :)

. . .which won a Tony(s?), so we're not completely off topic. . .

Really weird you mentioned that. My d's best friend is a "wrangler" for the Broadway Spelling Bee; she called last night to offer us 2 free tix for tonight (couldn't use them, unfortunately!) and while she was on the phone, what came on TV but the National Spelling Bee! And as you know, it's only on once a year. WEIRD, huh?? Anyway, talking of Tonys, I for one, think Kristin Chenoweth's voice is more annoying than fingernails on a chalkboard. She's a great comic actress, but her speaking voice ( and at times, her singing voice) is SO nasally and annoying!! Am I the only one who thinks that? As far as Company, my family went along with my d's friend; we all fell asleep at various parts. It was one of the most boring Broadway shows I've seen. I agree with the fact that getting great actors/singers and expecting them to play an instrument proficiently is a little ridiculous.
I saw Mary Poppins last week; it was pretty good (I wasn't crazy about the book to begin with, so coming from me, "pretty good" is a compliment!)

It IS weird!
Those words in the National Spelling Bee were a lot harder than "solely." What's up with those kids being able to memorize the unabridged OED? Are they the next crop of MT applicants? This year's winner is a musician (and mathematician)--he'll probably get the keyboard role in the revival of the current revival of COMPANY!
By the way--"weird" is spelled weirdly. What happened to i before e?
SPELLING BEE should have a very long run--this time every year it gets that halo effect from the National Spelling Bee to keep it top of mind among people looking for a bway show.
And getting back to the Tonys: any folk have Tony pools in their workplaces (hehe)? Or Tony parties? Do you turn the applications process spreadsheets into Tony ballots? What do you guys do to enjoy the event?

I before e is such an awful rule. There are so many words that do not adhere to that rule.

I felt badly when a couple of weeks ago, I had posted that I had read on another internet site that Pirate Queen was closing and then could no longer find where I had read it and so it wasn't a fact and must have been a rumor. It was on a discussion board. However, I have now read official announcements that Pirate Queen is closing this month. I believe it was announced yesterday. And so, I guess it is.

We just got back from driving my D's car across the country for her use this summer and next term, and ended up in NYC with a few hours to kill before our flight home. While riding the escalotors at Macys Harold Square we saw a poster advertising a contest they are having to win tockets for the Tonys. I don't have details, except that is is a singing contest, to be held this Fri (June 8) in Macys. Tommy Tune will be one of the judges.
It might be fun for some of our talented CCers. I don't know where to get details, but I am sure one of you talented kids will get the info you need. The grand prize is two tickets to the Tonys.

Macy's holds this contest every year. Here are some further details.

http://www.playbill.com/news/article/108573.html

My D and a few of her friends are going to the Tonys. This will be the third time for her. It's a fun night.

Thanks alwaysamom - it looked like a fun opportunity.

re Pirate Queen...I'd been watching the Playbill grosses for weeks. S wanted to see it when we went to NYC in July. Word is that Young Frankenstein is going into the space and the plug needed to pull soon if it wasn't to be delayed. But the grossess have been horrible. 64% or so occupancy for a show that opened in April. But that's show biz...

I saw the Pirate Queen during it's pre-Broadway run in Chicago. You and your S should be overjoyed that you'll be free to see another show instead; it was just plain horrible. That was $300 and 2.5 hours of my life I'll never get back...

and now it really is closing...I don't know the date, sometime this summer.

I loved Pirate Queen and I was with a large group of people and they loved it too. THe reviews have been mixed but so many people really liked it. The music, the dancing, special effects, costumes, scenery etc. were just totally entertaining. Yes there is some Les Mis-like music, and yes there is some Riverdance, but it is also totally unique at the same time. I see a lot of theater and I would say to see it before it closes, I believe you can get discounted tickets.
