Too far for interview?

We live in a small town in the south. We requested an interview since we understand that this is an important part of the application process at Rochester. However, the alumni rep closest to us (1.5 hours away) "cancelled" the interview (per the Rochester website) because of the distance. I was a little surprised that she did not suggest a phone interview. I have emailed our regional admissions rep, but have not received a reply.

TsoCash, can you provide some guidance?

It’s a holiday weekend. Please be a little patient.

On Monday afternoon, if you haven’t received a reply to your email, pick up the phone and call the Admissions Office. Their phone number is: (585) 275-3221

The people who work there are friendly and helpful, and they will do their best to arrange an interview for you.

It should work out - perhaps with a phone interview from someone else. I’m not sure why the first person canceled without suggesting a phone interview, but perhaps they had a bit going on in their life.

You are doing fine time-wise. It was one year ago today that my guy was talking with relatives who convinced him to apply (he had been on the fence), so he went home the Sunday after Thanksgiving, started his app (had the Common App done, so started the extra stuff), and submitted it almost last minute. He had a phone interview in either Dec or Jan, was admitted, got merit aid and a nice financial aid package, and is now thanking the relatives who encouraged him to apply telling them it was the “best decision he almost didn’t make!” It was nice to hear - and it’s nice seeing him again. He has absolutely no regrets. He’s loving life there (including the academic/research opportunities and “life”).

WOWM, this was several weeks ago, but thanks for the number. I was really curious as to what others may have experienced - in other words, if any other applicants had done a phone interview or if Rochester prefers in-person interviews.

Creekland, thanks for your experience - this was the kind of feedback I was looking for.

Reader95,

A phone interview is always an appropriate substitute (they count exactly the same as in-person interviews). If you can’t make it to a live interviewing event, scheduling a phone interview with your Admissions Counselor is a great option: [University of Rochester : College Admissions](http://enrollment.rochester.edu/admissions/connect/counselor/)

Skype interviews are also another option!

Hopefully we will hear from you soon.

TsoCash,

Thanks for the reply. We have requested an interview with another alumni who is about 2 hours away and have emailed that person, letting them know we would be happy to do a phone interview. I guess if we do not hear back we will get in touch with our regional rep again (have not heard from him yet after our original email to him).

The fact that he hasn’t replied is probably just an accidental oversight, I would recommend trying to reach out to your Admissions Counselor again: [University of Rochester : College Admissions](http://enrollment.rochester.edu/admissions/connect/counselor/)

You can also feel free to call us toll free at 888-822-2256. Our receptionist can put you in touch with the counselor who represents your region. We really do love connecting with our students and answering their questions about the University of Rochester.

Please let me know if you have any more trouble connecting with us!

Best,

Tyler

TsoCash,

Thanks for your reply. We have a phone interview set up with a second alumni next week.
