too late for me to change to business?

Recently I decided I want to be a "big-suit businessman" at a solid company. I don't have any specific interests but I know I would enjoy strategic thinking and research and analysis.

My problem is my old age, complete lack of relevant business experience, and a relatively weak academic record. I hold a BS degree in physics, a DDS degree, and a certificate for completion of a residency. I've been working all along as a general dentist.

My other problem is with location. At this age and due to personal circumstances, I am restricted geographically only within the NYC area.

I want to enter NYU or Columbia for a full-time MBA ( estimated age at time of enrollment ~ 35 yrs ), work some summer internships, and then land a full-time corporate gig upon graduation. I don't want to do anything dental-related.

How are the prospects looking for me? Any suggested career routes? Any suggestions?

You won’t be much older than lots of students in an MBA program. I had several MD’s in my Wharton class years ago. Do well on the GMAT and go for it. In all honesty, your background would be of benefit in insurance, HMO’s and other health related fields which will all be hot in the next couple of decades, and people do tend to play on their experience following an MBA, but anything is possible.

I will be 35 when I get my MBA in December, and I am by no means the oldest one in my class. Using the MBA for a career transition is good move. You say you don’t want to do anything related to dentistry, but how about related to dental products? I wouldn’t be so quick to leave everything you know behind, having experience as a dentist could possibly help better your chances for business success… just a thought.
