I’ve been mourning the death of a close family relative for the past month and I’ve not been able to update admissions with my most recent accomplishments. I’m just starting to contact admissions, but I wonder if it will be too late. I really want to tell them about the stuff I’ve done in the time since the application and express my continued interest in these schools. The schools I’m planning to update are: Cornell, dartmouth, Northwestern, Hopkins (decision date: March 17)
I’m sorry for your loss, but they probably have already made their decisions and are just finalizing financial aid awards at this point. Sending in additional info won’t hurt you at all, but more then likely you are already in or out.
@Uni1234 thanks for your well wishes. would there be any negatives to sending in the updates at this point. if not, im gonna take ur advice and send them anyways. if i get waitlisted, those letters will still be in my file right?
I actually just sent out all of my update letters over the past couple days, so schools are definitely still accepting them. Just recognize that they may or may not have a chance to read them before presenting you at committee. For Cornell and Dartmouth I think you should be fine considering they aren’t releasing until the 30th, but for Johns Hopkins they will have most likely already made their decisions. I also applied to Northwestern and attempted to send them my update letter this morning, but they replied saying they were no longer accepting additional application material.
I would assume that if they add your updates to your application, they should remain if you are waitlisted, but if you get waitlisted you will most likely want to send in a letter specifically addressing that.
It is not negative if it is new information on achievements or awards received since you applied. This is not the time to ask a question that can be answered with a web search (actually that is never a good idea), but if you have achievements or awards, it is not too late until the acceptance are mailed and maybe not even then if you are waitlisted. No one on here knows exactly when decisions are made and finalized at each school, so do what you think is right, with no regrets.
If you would feel better if you sent the update then by all means do so. Just understand that unless the update is for something pretty earth-shattering that it will be unlikely to change any admissions decision this late in the game.
@ezbreezy8022 There would not be any negatives to sending them in and you might as well try especially if the release date isn’t until later in the month and yes they would stay in your file if you get waitlisted (if they accept them, which it seems Northwestern is not).
