Too late?

Would it be considered too late if I were to go into BU's financial aid office and ask for something?
I only committed May 1st because I was unsure of where I wanted to go, so I put off the FAFSA and got it sent back to me in June because of some errors I made.

Did you resubmit it with corrections? It’s not too late to file the FAFSA and receive whatever federal aid for which you might be eligible. But even for those who are eligible, federal aid is very limited.

Your question is really, I suppose, are you too late to receive any institutional aid that BU may make available to students. My guess would be that the deadline for that is long past, but you can check on the school’s financial aid webpages and find the information there. Or call the financial aid office and ask.

Okay, thanks.
So I’ll fix up the FAFSA, send it off and then when I go visit BU for orientation on Tuesday, I should go into the FA office and sort things out?

It can take several days (or more) for FAFSA processing and then the colleges have to download the info, which is not a daily event for most. Resubmit and email BU FA to let them know of the corrections. If you have your SAR by Tuesday and it’s correct, you might print a copy to take with you when you visit FA. Find out when their open hours are if you don’t have an appointment…but don’t expect them to have any offers or answers ready for you. They’ll have to create a financial aid package for you, which takes time, and it will probably consist of mostly loans (depending on your EFC). Did you submit the CSS Profile by the deadline?

What’s the SAR?

No, I submitted the CSS only in March, I believe the deadline was sometime in Feb.

SAR is Student Aid Report. This is what you get back from FAFSA after your application has been processed. It will have the EFC.

K, I just submitted my revamped FAFSA and sending off the signature page tomorrow. The CSS has been long done and I emailed the FA office to set up an appointment this week.

Any idea on when I’d get a SAR?

It sounds like you missed ALL of the financial aid application deadlines for Boston University. I would venture that you will not receive any institutional aid from them this year. By completing the FAFSA, you are eligible for stafford loans at least. If your EFC is low enough, you would be eligible and receive a Pell grant (EFC below $5000 or so).

I’m confused as to why you didn’t get the FAFSA and Profile done ON TIME for all of the schools you were considering? Each school has a financial aid application deadline. Did you NOT need aid when you made your decision to attend BU? How did you anticipate paying the $50,000 cost of attending?

Yeah, I missed them by a long shot.
You’re right, I didn’t need much aid when I applied and committed (May 1st) and then I had a feud with my parents as to how to pay it.

So then how would I get aid for my soph-senior years?

I think all the specific information you need regarding aid from BU for this fall, as well as the following years, is going to best come from them when you have your meeting with a financial aid officer there. We can only speculate. Go talk to the FA folks at BU and do it ASAP.

Just prepare yourself for difficult news. You may not get the aid you need. It may involve far more in loans than you should even think about taking out. BU likely won’t care much about your feud with your parents.

Maybe you’ll get better news than that, but in case you don’t, start thinking now about what your options are if BU is either impossible or unwise for this fall. Starting at a community college or a less expensive in-state university? Talking a gap year and reapplying next fall to some options where you may get merit aid – or deferring for a year at BU so that next year you can get all your financial aid applications in by the priority deadline? (That is, of course, something you must do for every school you may apply to in the future.)

Good luck.

Agreed with Rent’s post.

The bigger question you have is how you are going to pay for THIS year. We are parents of a BU graduate so we are quite familiar with the costs.

Also, BU does not guarantee to meet full need for all students. AND they require the Profile and FAFSA WITH your parent information included. As mentioned, the “feud” with your parents won’t factor into their calculations.

Please have multiple plans in mind in case BU does not have sufficient funding for you.

How much money do you need? And what was your family EFC (usually comes out right at the end of the filing of the FAFSA).

You need to talk to BU right away. If you were accepted without aid this is not a school where you’re likely to ever get any. If you can’t go without aid you may want to take a gap year and apply to more schools.
