Hi everyone! My daughter began taking dual enrollment credits the summer after 9th grade. She never intended to get an AA but rather focused on core high school classes such as ENC1101/02 and took classes she was interested in such marketing, criminology, public speaking, etc. At the end of the Spring semester she has earned 56 credits. She is registered for 10 credits this summer and 10 in the fall. She has not taken any humanities and all but two classes have been online so she does not meet the requirements of an AA. She just wanted to take the most rigorous course schedule since her high school does not offer too many AP classes ( she has taken 7 APs). She is now worried that this may be a problem. She wants to be treated as a Freshman for the class of 2020. She does not plan to transfer most of these classes, just the core requirements like Spanish and some math. She has earned straight A’s in all her classes and will be Valedictorian. Any words of wisdom about this situation? Thanks!
Don’t worry about it. If she’s accepted to UF, it will be as a freshman.
IF she had earned an AA, and she wasn’t accepted as a freshman, she would get a second at admissions as a transfer student. However, that’s not going to be the case with her.
UF will allow her to transfer up to 45 credits. These credits do NOT count toward her “Excess” hour limit. Based on her major, it may give her the option of graduating earlier, or perhaps completing two degrees (minors, etc.).
All of the affects (of the extra credits) are positive.
Good Luck!
I knew I could count on you Gator88NE! Thank you for the feedback:)
@funfit - actually no the 45 limit is for all test credit not dual enrollment. The dual enrollment credits will depend on whether or not she has been attending a university or state college for whether or not there is a limit.
All students in high school are required to apply as freshman and get a full freshman review - if not admitted then we will look to see if transfer is possible.
Ack! That’s the second time Melissa96’s had to correct me on the DE vs Test credit issue! Sorry
Still, it just means she may earn more than 45 credits, based on the review. She is still going through the full freshman review process. More credits is even better…
@Melissa96 Thank you for the clarification. So she will have 76 credits at the end of Fall 19. Do you think it would look okay if after taking 9-10 credits a semester she only took 3 in the Spring of 20 so she could work to make money for school?
@funfit - 2 questions - 1) which college is she doing dual enrollment through. 2) will she have a full high school schedule and then just one dual enrollment class?
She has taken all her dual enrollment at community college. She will take 2 APs and 1 de an internship and work. We are in state. She is currently #1 in her class.
Okay, the community college credit is going to max at 60 hours to count towards the degree. It sounds like she has been working hard.
