TOO many extracurricular activities?

So, as a general rule, only include clubs you're serious about/have leadership positions in?

:edit:

Also, I write a lot (creative writing), and I've placed in/won a few writing contests...Should I only include national ones, like Scholastic, or include a lot of them, since it's one of my passions?

I'm a Key Club LTG and I think you should go for that position as well. I don't what District you're from, so I can't tell you how intensive your District Board is, but I can tell you to research the position first. Talk to the Immediate Past LTG, or even the Governor, so that you're fully aware of what you would be required to do.

I've only been an LTG for two months, but I can already tell you that it is a great experience. Just make sure you leave your home club in the hands of someone capable.

teenage_cliche: I participated extensively in writing contests as a high-schooler, including Scholastic and other more regional competitions, so I feel sort of qualified to answer this question. Honestly, the answer depends on (a) how many spaces you have, (b) the number and prestige of other awards you've won, and (c) how much you want to emphasize your writing in your application.

I would definitely include your Scholastic award, especially if it was on the national level. Anything on the state level is also probably worth including. Additionally, your English/humanities teacher can probably find space on his or her recommendation to list or mention any "minor" awards you've won or contests in which you've participated.

Regarding the OP...I was secretary of my school's chapter of NHS, and I certainly don't think it was a useless position. It was not the most important part of my high school career by any means, but it was an important job that I was willing to do on top of my regular duties as an NHS member.

That being said, if you can be president in three other clubs while still keeping up high grades, more power to you. From your post, you seem very sincere about your passion for those clubs, so I have no doubt you will be a good leader.

NHS is actually really important I heard.

^since when? lol. actually for my schol they actualy put NHS on your TRANSCRIPT so i dont have to waste a slot. you can always put it under awards if you truly want it there. but the online common app can only allow so many characters in the awards section.

can i abbreviated everything: AIME, USNCO, etc. is that bad? they know what those acronyms are..........right????????

and haha i have like 6 leadership positions. =P but im truly committed to like 3 of them. lol. the other ones i guess wouldn't hurt to put down. it probably is better than just putting down member of xxx club, no?

"Oh question. I'm in the mayor's commission, governor's commission, and the national youth council and someone replied on here, "But the commissions and councils might be tiring on an adcom eye after a while."

Getting selected for national or state commissions is extremely impressive because of the difficulty in attaining such slots.

Filling up all of the lines on the common app with clubs and school activities is already a bad sign.

^what about the 7 lines they GIVE u?

yeah...having 7 clubs is usually not a good thing. A lot of adcom reps at colleges I've visited talked about how they'd rather see a couple of dedicated activities rather than a "laundry list" of activities that fill up all 7. A couple even said that common app gives way too many lines for activities in the first place.

yes, but you'd rather fill up those 7 than leave some blank right?

yes, because colleges want u focused in mostly one field, too much diversity could mean you lack depth. Unless they are in the same field disregard this.

mine are either in the same field or general volunteering

mine are all over the place :(

k so my questions not being answered in the other thread

WHERE do i put summer programs like SSP, RSI, TASP, etc? in the "Activities" section or the "work experience"

Or the summer section?

summer experiences?

lol that's not in the 07-08 common app. is it in the 08-09 app?

It's under other secondary schools... or something like that.

lemme examine...

I just checked.. there are only 3 spaces though.. and I've participated in way more than 3 programs... What do I do?
