So I have a lot of interests and need help narrowing it down to 2 majors and a minor. I will be a freshman next year and I know I want to do something in languages/humanities/social sciences/history, but I'm not sure what.

My major is a residential program called Residential College in the Arts and Humanities (RCAH) which is a interdisciplinary program of arts, culture, world history, community service, and languages.

They encourage you to double major and I want to, along with a minor. I am looking at: anthropology, linguistics, and Spanish.

My original plan was to double major in RCAH and anthro and minor in Spanish, but I really want to do linguistics too.

I would love to do post-grad work in linguistic anthropology, but I am completely at a loss as to what I want to do as a career after college. I really just want to go into a career where I can experience different cultures, history, foreign language, and if I could help kids, it would be a major plus (yes, an odd combination I know).

Any advice is greatly appreciated, especially from anyone who has experience in any of these majors.

Yes, that was long. My apologies lol.

If you can’t let go of linguistics, then I would double major in Anthropology and Linguistics. That way you’ll be prime for graduate school if you choose. Can you minor in Spanish at your college? Whatever interests you the most out of those three, give the top two priority while still excising the third in one form or another.

As for careers, have you thought about being an FSO (Foreign Service Officer)?:
[U.S. Department of State Careers - Foreign Service Officer](Foreign Service Officer - Careers)

All of those have majors and minors, except for the Residential College in Arts and Humanities which is my primary major.

No, I’ve never thought about FSO. It looks interesting, I’ll look into it. Thanks :)

Interesting to find this. You sound almost exactly like my daughter - same interests, and I’ve recommended the FSO option to her through the State dept. as well…

We’ve been looking at the U.T. Austin Linguistic Anthropology deptarment (seems to be one of the only and one of the best in the U.S.) and found what looks like a graduate school opportunity at NAU in Flagstaff… Both good schools in nice locations. I love Flagstaff, so I’d be thrilled if she ended up there someday.

John.

I went through the same thing. In fact, I am two years in and have only now settled on a major. I don’t know if this will work for you, but I have been concentrating on my core and each semester taking one or two classes required for the various majors that interested me. That way I stayed on track to graduate on time and got a chance to explore different majors. Do you have to declare right now? Could you take a few classes during Freshman year and see what fits?
