too many reaches?

Hi! I am a junior in high school from NJ. I'm not sure of my GPA, but I am mostly a B student with about two A's thrown in every semester. All in all at the end of high school i will have taken 5 AP classes.
I am applying for studio art programs, although most schools on my list do not require a portfolio. Neither one of my parents went to college, so I am first generation. I have been Art editor of my school's lit mag since sophomore year, and next year I will be editor-in-chief. I was also president of my school's art club this previous year (junior year), and will be again next year. I have also had a steady job since sophomore year. My SAT scores were
CR: 690 Math: 520 and Writing: 550. My guidence counselor has been unbelievably unhelpful so I am left to navigate this on my own hahaha. On my list of schools are:
+Monmouth ( I know I could get in )
+UNC- Wilmington
+ U of Mich
+ U of Maryland
+ Lafayette
+ Fordham
+ CU- Boulder

I know my math score isn't so great but I hope that it helps that I will be applying for art and not math/engineering/science.

Thanks so much!

A few questions to help clarify:

Are you planning to take the SAT again in the fall to try to raise your math score? (and getting CR over 700 wouldn’t be bad, either).

Are finances an issue? Are you looking for scholarship money? With an art major you don’t want to be taking out massive student loans, so OOS tuition isn’t such a good idea unless your parents can and will pay for it.

Why did you pick these schools? Is it based on their art programs, or for some other reason?

I am going to try to take the SAT again in the fall, but I doubt it would do much good. I am going to be looking for scholarship money, but I am planning on either pursuing an MAT (to be an art teacher) or a PhD in Art History to teach at the college level. I picked them for various reasons, my parents do not want me going to an art school, I loved the campuses and the people, and they are each within a few hours of my home.

You should DEFINITELY try to raise your math and writing scores to at least 620. As of right now, those two scores are barely above the national average, which could mean serious trouble to selective schools like U. Michigan.

Well, they can’t all be within a few hours of your home (CU and Michigan are a day and a half of driving apart, and Maryland is on the east coast).

“I am going to be looking for scholarship money” doesn’t really answer the question. If you look at the full price of attending each of these schools, and then add the cost of the MAT or PhD on top of it in a field that does not pay well, you really need to take a hard look at the financial situation. You may need to look at in-state schools, other state schools where your state has reciprocity, or private schools that give generous merit aid AND your stats (both CR and Math) are in their top 10% or so. Unless your parents are willing and able to pick up the bill. Scholarships aren’t that easy to come by, especially with your current SAT scores…

Though dilgent self study, my kid was able to raise her SAT math from 520 to 630 (LOTS of studying, and I helped her). You probably could do the same, but it does require a lot of elbow grease if you are not a natural math student (as my kid was not as well).

Also, be sure to visit any school you are considering and get a good look at the studio art department. Sit in on a class, meet with a professor, chat with some students. You will find a wide variety of focus and quality across departments, I think.

You may want to read through some of the threads in the Visual Arts and Film Majors Forum for ideas.
CC’s own Xiggi offers excellent advice on self-study for the SAT. You can do this at home: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/68210-xiggis-sat-prep-advice.html

Sit down with your parents (or whoever it is who will be helping you pay for college), and find out how much money is available. Can they pay $50,000 each year? $30,000 each year? $20,000? $10,000? $5,000? Nothing at all? You really do need to know.

Oops, should have mentioned that my grandparents live in CO very close to CU and that is why I’m applying there.

CU would cost you $47K/year.
