Too Much Information?

Jmmom suggested that I would get some good responses here so I am posting this here as well. I was at university about 1.5 years ago and left in February and moved abroad (university was in Canada and I moved to England) where I now work fulltime. At the time, I left university because I was unhappy with it (I didn't enjoy my classes, I didn't feel the prof's were that involved and generally it just wasn't the place for me) at the time however I was also dealing with my parents divorce and was on medication for clinical depression. Is this worth mentioning on my application in an essay? I am now off of medication and I do know that part of my leaving was to try and regain some control over my life and outside issues that I felt helpless against. But I did move to England alone and by myself to basically start up. Anyway I will be applying to Georgetown. Is this simply too much information?

yes. schools are leary of kids with mental health illnesses due to liability issues. IMHO - leave out the depression topic in your essay!

I agree with anxiousmom. If Georgetown's transfer application asks why you left your last school, just say you were disatisfied with the academic challenge, or needed time to assess your goals, and leave it at that. The ONLY exception to this would be if it is likely that a reference letter from your old school might refer to your clinical depression. Otherwise, don't mention it if it is now under control. But, do be sure to check out the counseling and support services available at Georgetown and other schools you are considering.

great thanks for the tip carolyn. It's interesting, the students I've talked to say mention it and the parents say don't. But I think saying i needed time to assess my goals is a great way of putting it. Thanks to both of you.

megtfs, I also agree with carolyn and anxiousmom, but wanted to hear other opinions before sticking my neck out. What are the essay prompts for Georgetown? And... if you want someone to review and comment on your essays, when the time comes, please feel free to PM me.

One of the essays is autobiographical and the other is a 'why georgetown' essay basically. Thanks jmmom I will take you up on that!
