I'm free-associating, imagining seein these in chronological order, one then the next...aaaaah! I guess I think in story-lines:

Fiddler (mother's milk to me; and we all came from "somewhere"

Man of La Mancha (the courage of imagination to break free...

Yentl (on our way, across the oceans....

Cabaret (what happens if you don't move decisively when you should...

Music Man (ditto .. for the Americana)

Porgy and Bess (ditto ..

West Side Story (groups meet in America...

Ragtime (ditto .. social change in America...

Chorus Line (...redemption through entertainment)

Chicago (...ditto; it was worth the whole journey just to RIchard Gere
tapdance.)
Would like to see become a musical:
The Godfather

nat halftmt...have you seen Spring Awakening YET???? I can't wait. my bf already saw it, the jerk, and i am jealous beyong compare. but, all is not lost, im going to see it in April, over spring break!!

I'm kinda a lurker but I had to add on cause it shocked me that almost everyones seem so much the same, and mine are so different.
I don't have a definate final ten, but its something like this (in no particular order):
-Pajama Game
-Flower Drum Song
-Kiss Me, Kate
-Singin' in the Rain
-South Pacific
-Oklahoma
-White Christmas
-Meet Me In St. Louis
-Chicago
-On The Town

It's pretty much ones that I love to both listen to and watch. But that isn't nearly my huge list of loved musicals....just the first top ones I thought of.

And in no particular order:
Avenue Q
Hairspray
Urinetown
Little Shop of Horrors
Songs for a New World
I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change
Nine

Great musical, huh? And virtually unknown. It's very technically challenging (on the special effects end), of course, but there are some great songs and moments in it.

I don't hate any musicals. I recall going to one that my kids didn't think that well of, however. They just didn't think Mamma Mia was appealing. It was entertaining a bit but just not on par with the many musicals they love.

I'm not particularly fond of Grease. While it is a "coming of age" sort of show, I've always felt there is a message there about peer pressure and conformity that isn't particularly healthy.

Hmm my top six or so are easy, but after that it's down to my mood at the time!

Les Mis

Chess (British/Danish version)

We Will Rock You

Jesus Christ Superstar

Hair

Spamalot

Time

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat

Cabaret

Starlight Express

Tarhunt, I really want to like Threepenny but even after seeing multiple productions, including the recent one on Broadway (and I love Cyndi Lauper and Alan Cumming), Williamstown Theatre Festival's production (with Jesse L. Martin!), and even one which my D performed in, I just cannot seem to enjoy the show itself.

Ahh, Starlight Express, what a crazy and fun show. It was my first time seeing Jane Krakowski onstage and I think I've seen every show she's done since. Such a talent!

Heh, I always get told off for liking things like Starlight Express. Oh yes it's gimmicky but it's funny and enjoyable :D I wonder how many parents got pestered for rollerskates after taking kids to that...

We Will Rock You seems to be the marmite of West End musicals (do Americans know what marmite is actually?). Critics all seem to loathe it but it's very popular with audiences and has done much better than a lot of West End shows of the past few years.
Anyway, I think it's absolutely hilarious, a really good concept, never seen it badly performed and it's Queen music :D

This is tough as I tend to like everything I see! I will give it a shot though.

Top Ten (No particular order)
1. Big River
2. Drowsy Chaperone
3. Thoroughly Modern Millie
4. Beauty and the Beast
5. Crazy For You
6. Oklahoma
7. Aida
8. Miss Saigon
9. Seussical
10. Phantom

No particular order, just how they came to mind.

Phantom (1st Broadway show I ever saw!)

Lestat (Yes, I was one of the few fans!)

Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living In Paris

Jesus Christ Superstar (Probably will remain my favorite show of all time!)

Hedwig and the Angry Inch

The Last 5 Years

Sweeney Todd

Carnival

Les Miz

Edward Scissorhands (Not really a musical - it's a dance musical, but such a beautiful production!)
