Top 10 Favorite Musicals

I find this so hard to do which is why I didn't post when I saw the original post. But, I want to tell ya, alwaysamom, that as soon as I saw the thread, one show I knew I HAD to include was Ragtime, which I thought was GREAT.

One thing I truly love about Broadway is the wide variety of musicals that are almost too hard to compare. I like them for different reasons. Some are purely entertaining, some have great music, some have great stories, some are incredibly creative. I can really enjoy a show like Movin' Out and then also Ragtime but they are so utterly different types of shows.

I don't know where to begin because I have enjoyed so many shows!

I'll name some but really have trouble keeping it to ten....

Ragtime
A Chorus Line
RENT
Cabaret
Once On This Island
42nd Street
Hair

I like some classics such as:
Fiddler on the Roof
Sound of Music
Gypsy
West Side Story

Next ones I am hoping to see on Broadway are Jersey Boys and Spring Awakening. I also think the music in Avenue Q is creative and wouldn't mind seeing it live.

spring awakening is also the next one im seeing on broadway!!!

Wow great lists!
I recently saw Company and thought it was amazing.
How come no Spamalot on the lists?---Always look on the bright side of life!

No particular order: Gypsy, West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, Guys and Dolls, Wonderful Town, Sound of Music, Drowsy Chaperone, A Chorus Line, Company, Kiss Me, Kate.

oldolddad--I love Spamalot's soundtrack, but I have not seen the show yet, so I didn't know if it counted if one had not actually seen it. Also love music from Millie and Spelling Bee, but haven't seen them yet either.

Reading this thread makes me want to go to New York this spring to do a Broadway "power" trip-- 7 days 7 plays!

My top 10, and I'm only choosing from shows I've seen/participated in:

The Music Man - it has a cohesiveness that comes from the book and the music having the same author. The leading man is a con artist, but you still root for him.

Sunday In The Park With George - it's actually difficult for me to choose on Sondheim over another, but I'll go with this one because the music is so glorious. And the original cast performed it without amplification!

Ruthless! The Musical - The most hilarious night I ever spent in the theater was watching this show. It pays tribute to Mommy Dearest, All About Eve, The Bad Seed, Gypsy...just a great show.

Kiss Me! Kate - terrific Cole Porter lyrics, great dancing, and very funny.

The Mystery of Edwin Drood - okay, audience participation may be dorky, but it was fun, and the trio on Moonfall that is usually cut from productions is so beautiful that I would add it to my list just for that.

Oklahoma! - it's a classic for a reason.

Sweeney Todd - okay, I couldn't keep my list to just 1 Sondheim.

West Side Story - Shakespeare + Bernstein + Sondheim = awesome

Pippin - this one, for me, is all about Bob Fosse. Since I'm an oldster, I can brag that I saw the original cast perform this one. (I didn't see the more recent production of Cabaret, but that's my favorite movie musical.)

Porgy & Bess - Gershwin.

Here's one not many people have heard of, but it's absolutely hilarious!

Something's Afoot

I'll go for Top 10 Cast Recordings instead of favorite musicals (I haven't seen too many of these). Kind of in order. These are just ones I like to jam out to lol.
