Wow! How did you know I saw more than one cast???
first time was Matthew M and Kelli O'H. great. Next time was understudy David Burnham, who I guess is touring with it now, and Kelli O'H--that was really great. He seemed like a kid, well matched with Clara's child-like character. Matthew seemed much more mature, worldly-wise. The time after that was Aaron L and Kelli O'H and yikes. greater still. Saw it again with these two, and then one more time, with Katie C and Aaron L. Wow! And of course, Victoria Clark always, who each time was better than the time before. BUT. . .I believe that the show is so rich that it takes several viewings (as well as listenings to the album) to fully appreciate its beauty. (And the beauty IS!) Each of these performers was superb, and different, each brought different dimensions to his/her character, each seemed REAL in his/her own way. My increasing enjoyment of the piece I think had to do with understanding the piece more fully each time; I don't feel that one cast was better/worse than another, though I may have used comparative adjectives. Just different. So, key message here: The more I saw it, the more I liked it. I'm not certain it had that much to do with the cast. It's that great a piece. It merits many viewings. Musically, visually, textually, it's art. And with all these great artists performing in it, it's sublime.
What about you, TheatreJock? Do you have a preferred cast?

Wow, you have seen it quite a few times. Do you live in or near the city? I actually saw it with Matthew Morrison and Kelly O'Harra....BUT then I saw the PBS special and Aaron Lazar became my hero. I also actually thought that Katie Clark portrayed Clara better in the fact that she was more convincing that her character was stuck in the state of that young age. And of course Victoria Clark was brilliant. Favorite song?...mine..Love To Me

TheatreJock--agree about katie more convincing as young; vocal chops not the same as kelli's, but that's okay. it's a trade-off. aaron's just downright fantastic.
Favorite song: yes--Love to Me. especially the phrase "And do not know that you are beautiful." exquisite.
Also: Fable. and Dividing Day. and The Beauty Is. and Light in the Piazza. and all the others.
I live near enough to have gotten there when I needed to, which turned out to be often.

Interesting discussion! We saw Light in the Piazza with Kelli O'Hara and saw the PBS special with Katie Clark. My daughter and I didn't think there was even a comparison vocally--actually my daughter thought Katie must not have had good vocal training from what we heard on the special. And we didn't care for her interpretation of Clara. Seemed too forced... that she seemed to make Clara too mentally retarded (awkward hand gestures, pounding her forehead, etc. ) rather than portaying the innocence that Kelli conveyed. Maybe because I'm a special ed. teacher, I just found it almost offensive. Interesting that others preferred it! I love theater for just that reason!
As for songs--Victoria Clark singing Dividing Day or the gut-wrenching Beauty Is reprise--so close to perfection... I don't think I've ever seen better. I was sobbing so much at the end of the performance, it took me about half an hour to regain my composure. I love so many of the songs I can almost not choose a favorite. The Beauty Is would be way up there though also! Love to Me is also a favorite. And of course the title song. And Fable. Such an amazing show! I've listened to the CD until it doesn't play correctly any more!
Love, love loved this show!

until my son is in school in New York and I can visit him and get to see these plays. Of course, we will most likely be broke paying for college and probably will not be able to see them. Oh well.... maybe someday. Thanks for letting me wish.

durango...even if YOU can't go much to see shows on Bdway....now that your son will be living in NYC, the good news is that HE will see a LOT of theater! (student rush makes shows more affordable too)

I'm so happy for him. He's in Denver right now waiting for his flight to La Guardia for S@S. We got slammed with snow last night and today and he drove over mountain pass, 7 hours to get to Denver for his flight. He arrived safely. We're hoping he doesn't get delayed in Denver, it's snowing right now, but not severely.
Jeanette

Durango...um, not only did we already have a bunch of snow on the ground and not only has it been snowing lately all the time, even though it is April, it has snowed at least six new inches today at my house and is still snowing. I hear it is raining in NYC (D who is there told me). Unfortunately, the weather in the East, including NYC, is much colder than normal for this time of year. Two years ago, I recall my D wearing a sundress to Saturday in the Square. This year will require a winter coat!

He definitely took his wool pea coat, and a wool scarf and gloves. It's been like spring here for several weeks, then two nights ago this wind came tearing into town and it's been cold ever since. It's good he'll experience the cold. (It was very cold when we were there in Feb). We're originally from Wisconsin so know how it can be biting, freezing, blistery stormy cold, but Austin was only in 1st grade when we left. The young just don't feel it like we do as we get older, I guess. He's so excited about the whole college NYU thing that he's walking on air, and probably doesn't even mind the weather. Thanks for the input. I should've had him take an umbrella or something like that. He's going to have to develop a tough skin, though, in this game, Huh?
