next thing he would be arguing is that ND is more well-known than Yale or Stanford. He already argued ND is more well-known than MIT anyway.

at least he seems to know Harvard which is relief.

does anyone know which teachers i should ask for teacher recommendations to get into university of phoenix?

Everybody has heard of MIT, Dartmouth, and Brown.

what's brown? thats what i call my # 2...

"Everybody has heard of MIT, Dartmouth, and Brown."

Maybe MIT, but it's not true that everyone has heard of Dartmouth and Brown. A girl from our school got into Dartmouth College a few years ago and I was one of the ONLY people who knew that it was an extremely prestigious college. A lot of my peers couldn't understand why the Valedictorian was going to an unknown school instead of taking her full-ride at UT or Texas A&M. Most people don't even know it's in the Ivy League. Same for Brown. But then again, most people here think Stanford and MIT are Ivies, so there you go.

I just don't think Dartmouth and Brown are as widely known in the south and southwest as they are in the north.

Ok course I've heard of UMass Dartmouth and Bobbi Brown. But they aren't Ivies like Standford and MIT.

Wut it do,

I just Graduated from Berkeley with a 3.75 and am currently studying for the LSAT. I take my test in October and plan to send out my application early November. Realistically, what's the lowest LSAT score I can get on the LSAT and still be competitive for the top 15 Law Schools?

Hi. You should post here to get more answers: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/law-school/

I never said a word about prestige or academic quality. I was answering the claims about widespread fame in posts #440 and 455. Next time you get a haircut, ask your barber if he's ever heard of Notre Dame and MIT.

...and no, if someone knows Harvard, more so if they know Notre Dame, then they definitely know MIT. claiming MIT is not well-known to laypeople is simply being delusional.

I completely and totally disagree. The average layperson has heard of Harvard just the same way that they've heard of the Mona Lisa -- something's got to own the space of the "best," and that's commonly it. And Notre Dame has wide sports knowledge. I don't at all think the average layperson has heard of MIT other than in general passing, unless in the Boston area. Why ever would they?

I don't think so. Generally, people do seem to know what MIT is.

I agree. People here may not know all the Ivy schools, but they definitely know that MIT is a top school.

Xjis and Agent of Sense, what experiences have you had that make you think MIT is so widely known among the common folk? Where do you live? What sorts of people do you mix with?

I'd agree a lot more people are aware of MIT now due to "Good Will Hunting" and this new blackjack movie with Kevin Spacey. And it's always been known among engineers and the academic elite. But each of those people has also heard of Notre Dame. I'm trying to imagine which subset of people in this country have heard of MIT and haven't heard of Notre Dame. Home schooled chess prodigies?

It's only a matter of time before somebody writes, "He probably even thinks more people have heard of Notre Dame than Harvey Mudd."

...and what we can learn from all this is that there is no definitive answer so it's not worth arguing...OK...maybe Harvard is definitive, but beyond that, nothing. The End

Xjis, I believe you said you didn't know Notre Dame before you came to this forum, or Vanderbilt for that matter. Are you from another country, perhaps?

People at school, family, etc. I'm from the Southeast. I mix with a racially and economically diverse group of people. I never knew what Notre Dame was. I would say, people I'm around know would epitomize Princeton, Stanford, Harvard, MIT, etc. Anyway, I never said anything about Notre Dame before...only that MIT is recognized.

I never heard of Vanderbilt before coming to this forum.

IMHO, my personal top 16:

HYPSM: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT (5)

Ivy Level: Penn, Columbia, Dartmouth, Cornell, Brown (5)

Non Ivy Level: Chicago, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, UC Berkeley, Duke, Caltech (6)

Wow - where do you people live that you never heard of Vanderbilt??
