I'm also trying to figure out how HYP can have 70%+ of the students they admit matriculate at each school

Princeton's yield MAY drop this year as it sets aside its early decision program--that's one of the issues everyone will be looking at as Harvard, Princeton, and Virginia experiment with single-deadline admission systems.

What I find completely astonishing is that Andover can send over 50% of its grads to 17 'top 20's, Georgetown, USC, and Wesleyan. That is criminal.

Re post 491:http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/4982228-post491.html

When you click on the link, you'll see that the list has been amended since its original publication because the initial methodology of the WSJ did not accurately identify the students they were looking for by their criteria.

What's wrong with Andover graduates enjoying great success at getting into great colleges?

I checked the Westminster website for more current numbers and 2007 was posted. I thought I'd show them compared to Papa Chicken's numbers from 2005; schools with 2 or 3 attending not shown this time:

A couple of interesting things: (1) website said 187 students but 100 boys and 84 girls, so the other 3 would be what?!? (2) as a 197x Westminster graduate, the 2007 list isn't very different from what ours would have been except Wake wasn't even on the radar, I don't recall anyone going to Georgetown, and UNCCH consistently had at least 4. There is somewhat more diversity of destinations on the 2005 list than in our class, I think.

DSC: Do good students not deserve to go to top 20 schools just because they went to Andover? Not everyone can be in the top 10% and with an average SAT at Andover being around 2100, most average Andover students are bright kids.

Sorry, I was saying criminal in a non-negaitve manner, more of a WOW manner. Bad word choice on my part. Criminal was meant to describe how far out of the expected results(at least on my part), rather than theft or anything like that.

I have lots of respect for the Andover/other top prep school kids, and actually think that they are overly persecuted.

Oh, okay, you mean it's so bad it's good. :) Yeah, we considered Andover for our son. We're trying something different, but Andover looks like a good fit for a lot of learners from a lot of places.

Any info on Torrey Pines HS (San Diego, CA)? Very prestigious public school here, they send a ton of grads to top schools.

Also, Westview HS (Carmel Valley, CA). Another prolific public, just for comparison.

To VC08:

Princeton high school has a lot of Princeton University faculty and high-level staff kids attending, much more so than, say, New Haven or Cambridge public high schools. Princeton H.S. is a very very elite suburban public school with not too much competition from area day schools (at least as far as I know). It's probably the best public high school within easy commuting distance of Princeton. Faculty kids from Yale are more likely found at Hopkins or Choate (or one of a number of very nice elite suburban high schools in the area); faculty brats from Harvard may be profitably searched for at Milton Academy, or BB&N or Noble & Greenough or one of the many fine suburban public high schools nearby. I think this explains a certain amount (quite a bit?) of Princeton High School's phenomenal success in placing kids at Princeton.

-- the phenomenon well articulated by memake... elite colleges/universities being fed by nearby public HS's, is mentioned in posts 339-345 (344 on Princeton HS)...others include Boston Latin, Ithaca HS (Cornell), Mt Greylock (Williams) and Hanover HS (Dartmouth) The Ithaca HS web-accessible data are most interesting, with some detailed breakdowns of standardized tests scores vs acceptances....its easy to speculate from the Ithaca/Cornell data that there must be many Cornell faculty & staff children applying.

Hi Papa chicken

Thanks for all the work and data. It is a lots of informations. For St. Mark’s School of Texas, they have five year matriculation data on the web site. From 2005 to 2009, there were 92 students matricuated to Ivy, S+M, and SWAP. If each senior calss had 80 students, that will be a rate of 23%. For the class of 2009, there were 20 seniors matriculated to Ivy, S+M, and SWAP, so that was a rate of about 25%.
