We knew it was coming: UT toughening admissions standard

The legislature passed this six months ago…

Yes, but it’s the first time the university has said what it will take to get in, a more specific estimate. Just giving the heads up.

That’s great news. The whole problem with the screwed up UT admissions for the past decade has been those 9th and 10th percentile kids. I’m glad to see that one’s solved so we can get back to making the football team better.

Big deal. This is still fail. It needed to be top 5% to get this population under control. The value of a degree from UT will continue to drop every year due to dilution.

Top 8% is still just an estimate because they have to follow the law. It may very well be lower or higher. The 8% number has been cited since March though. The Statesman is just slow as usual.

Actually, for 2011, they are guaranteeing acceptance for top 8%. Please see the press release from Dr. Powers:

[The University of Texas at Austin to Automatically Admit Top 8 Percent of High School Graduates for 2011 | The University of Texas at Austin](http://www.utexas.edu/news/2009/09/16/top8_percent/)

This coupled with them shifting financial aid funds from national merit to need is not how i pictured competing against UVA, Michigan, UCLA, Berkeley.
