Hi guys, I'm a 25 year old college graduate from Dublin Ireland looking into Acting Schools in the USA. Could I please get a heads up on the top schools over there. Looking for a 1-2 year course, centred around method acting. Reputable schools I've heard of are The Stella Adler Conservatory, The American Academy of Acting, Julliard, The Actor's Studio, Titch, the NY School of Film etc. Any advise would be most welcome for this poor confused Leprechaun!

I believe that Julliard is a four year program... at least a three year. It is very well regarded in the US. Yale School of Drama is probably second in terms of reputation and regard... This is a three year program that offers both an MFA degree and a Certificate option.

Tisch and The Actor's Studio at Pace University are also three year MFA programs.

There are two year conservatory programs... I believe that The Neighborhood Playhouse has a strong Meisner training program. I have also heard wonderful things about the Atlantic Theatre Company's two year conservatory program.

Good luck!

Hi Kat, thanks a million for your comments. Have you heard any gossip on the Stella Adler Conservatory in LA, or the American Academy of Acting in LA?

I've heard of all the schools you mentioned, save for Atlantic Theatre Company, which I must check out...unfortunately as I'm turning old and grey, I'm keen to get a move on, so 4 and 3 year programmes seem a bit of a stretch.

Thanks, chat to you later!

If anyone else has any words of wisdom, they would be most welcome, cheers guys,

Chuck

You might also want to look into the William Esper Studio and HB Studio.

25 old and gray!!!! Hahaha (lol)... that makes me a grandma!

I do understand the allure of a less than 3 year commitment, however... I went to graduate school in my late 20s... but once I was there, three years didn't really seem as long as I thought it would.

I have heard good things about the Stella Adler program... it looks like their conservatory is 2.5 years.

I have also heard good things about William Esper... mixed reviews on HB Studios... I have heard it depends a lot on the teacher.

I know a few people who have also really liked Circle in the Square and the Lee Strasberg Institute. I beleive tha those are 2 year conservatory programs.

fishbowlfreshman - thanks for your comments - you looking into acting school yourself?

Hey Kat - ha ha, I do have one grey hair! Was actually referring to the Stella Adler in LA - in fact I'm looking into LA schools in general as I'm interested in getting into TV and Film. Any ideas? Must also check out the above colleges.

You still acting, or have you retired form the game due to decrepit old age?

You should look at the Sanford Meisner Center in LA. It is a two year program with an option to continue for four.

Brandeis University gives an M.F.A. in acting, but it's 3 years and in the Boston area. Still you might find it relevant to your thoughts.

Chuck -- I do not know a lot about the conservatories in LA... I have friends who work out there, and will ask them, though.

No, I do not perform any longer. I received my MFA in directing and now direct and teach. :)

Hey that's great Kat, I appreciate it. That's cool, you're helping other people grow, I nearly became a teacher myself and still very well could!

Lysistrata and paying3tuitions - poor you - that's v.much for your thoughts,

Hello
I am student from greece so sry for my english!!I am interested in acting schools as well.i want to study in Usa acting but i have seen in different sites that the cost of these scools is too high.I think that i found a great school with many activities that every student want to participate in.It is called the N Y film academy. Is it popular, isn't it?However you must pay $12.000 per semester. Can u tell me some schools which are good and quite inexpensive for a 2 or 3 or four years program??thx a lot for the informations you mentioned.Last but not least, the schools u mentioned before are all of them in L.A???
Yours
George

i have only heard terrible things about stella adler's program. i liked aada, but im now going to william esper studios. cant wait. its about 9,000 a year( rought estimate)

Why don't you came to the us and try out some auditions??I know that some people will dislike what i'm going to say but, anyways taking a 2, 3 years program is waste of money if you are interested in tv/film....theater and film/tv acting are very different apart, of course a trainning in theater would be very good for any kind of acting , but not a must. go to some of the universities website and get the e-mail from one of the drama teacher and ask them what they suggest.
Last year, i did an extensive research about acting schools. I will try to find the name of the schools that i thought was worth it.

What bad things did you hear?

Chuck, you might want to check into Circle in the Square Theatre School in NYC. Very reputable, rigorous and intensive 2 year Acting program limited to 25 or so students per year. Many of the students are college grads that are seeking a conservatory style program on an MFA level. Admission is by audition and I believe you can audition up until May for the Fall 2009. You should speak with Colin O'Leary, the school's director.

Chuck, I should also mention that method acting is just a part of the study. Many of the conservatories teach Stanislavski, Adler, Meisner and Strasberg techniques and method. A conservatory will also train in voice, speech, movement, script analysis, scene study, stage combat, improv, etc. and not just acting method. You would need to research which is the best fit for you and visit the schools first if you can.

...hmmm...isn't it a little fruitless to rank universities...I mean, there is the distinction between conservatory style, liberal arts, universities that are specialized, eclectic, experimental...I think it has to do with what you want in an acting school.

For PRESTIGE--and just for the sake of making a list (BFA Acting) I'd say:
JULLIARD
CALARTS
CARNEGIE MELLON
PURCHASE
UNCSA
NYU
BOSTON UNIVERSITY

yeah I agree that it is a little wrong to rate these schools but from what I have been told or read... To my knowledge the top 5 Acting schools would be...
(in no particular order - as I refuse to put numbers next to them) But the list would look like this...

Carnegie Mellon, Purchase, Juilliard, Rutgers, and NCSA

I FORGOT RUTGERS!!! I am not too familiar with their program, though.
