top choice for summer 2009 internship

another quick question. I'm an international student, so I'm not 100% sure how a lot of the tax stuff works. How do taxes affect your summer intership pay? Are you expected to declare those earnings and pay taxes, or are taxes automatically deducted and paid for you by the firm?

thanks

automatically deducted, around 30% taken out of each paycheck =(

Yeah I lost about 800 dollars to taxes per check, but I will get a huge tax return, so it's no biggie

It's kind of BS that we don't get the fed. funds rate on taxes withheld until the rebate the following year.

@naru - True, but there are cases where you can underpay and not owe interest (I'm not a CPA - but I believe so long as you withhold as much in 2008 as you owed in 2007, you won't be penalized).

Where do you guys apply for these internships and find them? The firm websites?

They all come to my school, but if they don't do on campus recruiting then you pretty much have to apply online or do some networking.

Honestly speaking you won't find much right now considering how weak our economy is. Most firms are not hiring interns and those that are, your competition just shot up 100% since you will be competing against experienced, overly-qualified professionals who were laid off by the bulge bracket banks (Merrill, Lehman, Bear, ETC). However, never become discouraged. For those that are serious, I suggest to search popular job posting sites every single day until you find something and when you send in your resume/cc, make sure it's solid.

is anyone looking for work in prop trading?

I'd be interested in prop trading at a bank. Not necessarily prop trading for a small group - several of them use technical analysis or quant strategies. The former is lame, the latter I'm not good at.

half the people on this thread belong in equities in dallas.

"Honestly speaking you won't find much right now considering how weak our economy is."

While it's certainly a tougher market, most firms are hiring interns. Besides, getting into IB has never been "easy".

If you are looking for hedge fund or PE job right now you might have noticed the complete lack of job postings on Vault, Craigslist etc. If you are looking for a hedge fund internship or private equity internship I suggest contacting managers directly. You can find a cheap list of hedge funds at HedgeFundJobList.com - Hedge Fund Lists.

If you are going to contact hedge funds directly you will need to write strong cover letters that gain the managers attention.

I'm definitely interested in prop trading, right now I'm looking closely at a pretty big options MM in Chicago for this summer. I was used to mostly be interested in the IBs, but right now prop firms are a pretty good alternative, and also the buy side is a little more interesting imo. I'll probably still end up applying to all the banks, but this whole crisis has made me take a hard look at which job is more appealing and stable.
