top choice for summer 2009 internship

What are people's top choice's for internships at the big firms and in what division?

mine is j.p. morg in asset management.

Heh, in this market, any BB S&T or SIG Prop Trading would be ideal. Nice username btw haha

GS in S&T (10char)

GS S&T .

^ let the games begin...lol

i looked up the GS summer internship program and found this little fun quiz.

Goldman Sachs Careers | Where Do I Fit In?

im suppose to fit in in the global investment research or investment banking division.

I took the test too. Equities and FICC ftw!

FICC also :-)

I've got an internship with a premeir Boston PE shop lined up, so I am pumped. Private Equity straight from undergrad would be sick, and seeing as how I'm only going to have finished freshman year by the time of this internship, I should be on track to land a gig in a top shop. I love life

Congrats. Do you go to Harvard?

Credit Risk Management and Advisory, FICC, and IB=]

FICC, Credit Risk Management and Advisory and Global Investment Research.

although it appears that most on this thread are leaning toward S&T, isn't it true that IBD positions get many more applications than S&T?

First of all, for those who say GS S&T, make sure you know what program you're getting into

This year's summer class had 175 analysts... they have ~60-80 slots, depending on hiring needs. You do 3 rotations for 3 weeks each, and competition is extremely intense.

Consider MS S&T, they have about 50 summer analysts... they have ~40 slots. Which program would you prefer?

^^^Your MS S & Tcomment makes is false.

How could they have a 50 summer analyst class for 40 slots? That would mean their offer rate would have to be like 99% (which I know it is not) considering everyone that is given an offer will NOT accept from MS.

^^ it's 80% ;]

i have no idea what you're talking about for 99%...

generally ibd has offer rates of ~70-80%, whereas S&T is slightly more competitive at about 60-70%... GS is known to be slightly more difficult

in this environment, some firms like MS cut back on the intern class numbers and are taking most of their summer analysts

some firms like GS did not cut back but are simply hiring less than they used to

LOOK,

"Consider MS S&T, they have about 50 summer analysts... they have ~40 slots"

They need to have/ need to fill 40 slots right (according to you)? Yes they do
They have 50 S&T summers (according to you)? Yes

Which means they need to offer more than 40 kids jobs to attempt to fill their entire class, unless they plan on going full fledge for FT recruiting which most banks this year are not.

Therefore in order to fill 40 spots MS will have to offer atleast 45-50 kids jobs, considering not everyone will accept the offer. Its like college admissions, the number admitted is always higher than the number that actually attends.

Equities

10 char

clearly you have no idea how finance offers work

they aren't going to calculate any yields... if there are 3 spots available, one on forex, one on commodities, one on high yield, they will give out those 3 seats

if an intern doesn't take it, then they go to full time recruiting. they are not going to give out 4 offers and assume a 75% yield.

"Its like college admissions, the number admitted is always higher than the number that actually attends."

it's actually not at all like college admissions.

also, considering i just started full time training at one of banks i mentioned, i think i have the correct information...

for all the rising freshmen or sophomores, kinda stupid to be wishing on a BB non-ops/pwm internship unless you're uncle's an MD or you're using a diversity stamp to get in.
