and here is ronty's friend who is going to WPI...:)
Look its great for Engg. so if u have like awesome application and high SAT's then atleast apply...its a good school and will give you lots of merit scholarship..so if u dont get into that ivy (and trust me not to be -ve or so..many wont) then you'd be happy with yourself that u have an option..a good one...but then again all upto you...

^^^^^ yes. My Indian friend ;)

dickinson college in carlisle, Pa gave me a very generous financail aid package and i will be attending this fall.

you all shoudl look into it,

The problem with these small LACs is that they have country quotas. For instance, a guy got into Dickinson ED from my high school with finaid, and although I was more qualified than that guy I got waitlisted because I applied RD.

Every university has quotas. It's just that because of the small size of LACs, their corresponding quotas are also smaller -> that's why we feel the brunt of it. My school almost consistently sends only one person to Williams (though arnd 20 apply) every year also, despite the fact that say, 70 gets into Cornell every year. Oh, but I think Williams practises quota by SCHOOL as well...

well guys..let me tell you a few things.
Mostly, you are wrong with which schools gives scholarships to internationals...
Firstly,
Lehigh
Grinnell
Swarthmore... do give scholarships to internationals..I have friends that have gotten nearly full rides from all three...
Mostly, all the schools give scholarships to internarional students if they are QUALIFIED...let me give you some more names..
Bucknell, Villanova, George Washington, Northeastern, Columbia, vanderbilt, upenn, trinity university, trinity college, tulane, wpı, rpı, lafayette, syracuse(a little), embry riddle(a little).....
By the way, all of these universities have engineering departments..
I won't even count the LAC's; because most of them do give aids for internationals...

which country are you frm dj Kurt?

I kinda agree with dj. I got almost 100% aid to oberlin. So I surprised to see Oberlin on Maxy's list. I don't also agree with the quota think. I know someone else from my town who was also admitted to Oberlin with full aid. What do you guys think?

Sorry. Substitute "think" with "thing"

LEHIGH - does send letters saying they will review your application if your finances change.. so u r basically wasting time with them unless you have a stellar application, but then again its like wasting time with THEM if u have one

CORNELL - is need blind for admissions only.. u might get an acceptance but zero fin aid like one of my friends unfortunately discovered..

Swarthmore - very small, therefore they take in very few so IMHO u r wasting time here, unless u really want to go there dont apply.

LAC's like colgate, middlebury, williams, etc very generous if u get in.. and many can even get full rides..

I agree whole heartedly about Swarthmore.

switch you are a successful applicant not only because you have a good file, but also because you come from an underrepresented country. There are many students who are just as qualified as you (and sometimes even more qualified) who don't get financial aid at any of the colleges on my list, just because they come from India or Eastern Europe instead of Western Europe or Africa. What I am trying to say is that the funds for intels at the colleges on my list are directed towards applicants who are favoured for criteria outside the control of the applicants (e.g. geographic location, gender etc.). Moreover, the countries that are well-represented in the US applicant pool tend to have more applicants who are self-supported than the countries that are underrepresented, so those colleges on my list will prefer to fulfil that well-represented country's quota with self-supported applicants.

I beg to differ with ntek and maxy's inclusion of Vassar on the list of schools that don't encourage internationals applyin' for financial aid. kee10 (a long lost CC-er) applied Vassar ED this year and was accepted with terrific aid. Oh, it may be said since she was an ED-er, she had first go and thus was at an advantage. True. But last year a classmate applied to Vassar RD (as well Harvard, Carleton and other places) and was accepted with fabulous financial aid. To put into context the "country quota", kee10's from Bangladesh and my classmate was Romanian.

I guess that you are right, maxy. Never thought of it like that. But doesn't that imply that those colleges have discriminatory admissions policies?

switch, welcome to US college admissions, where women in engineering get into most of the top universities and asians (especially domestic asian-americans) get rejected even if they are 2 times better than other applicants.

exactly, the statements these colleges make are actually quite conflicting .. they talk about their commitment to diversity and how they want to pick the "most diverse class" and one "where everyone can contribute in a unique way" and then say that everyone is equal

btw, for engineeering, do u have any suggested schools for me ?

Amherst is EXTREMELY generous for intels. Take this from someone who just received $49,920 in grant. Actually I filled in the "family contribution" in the ISFAA a value of $500, and believe it or not, they're making me contribute exactly $500! Look at it in the perspective of my grant and you see...

I totally agree with miaoling. Exactly the same thing happened to me. I was stunned when I received the email. I never imagined that the school would ask me to pay exactly what I said I could contribute. In my case, that was a real lifesaver ($100 more and I would have had a real dilemma on my hands). I got about 48k in grants with no loan. I assume that it may have not been like that for everyone but from my experience, saying that Amherst is generous is an understatement.

Miaoling are you going to Amherst this fall?
