Top colleges FinAid for internationals

wait amherst costs $49,000 to attend??? ***? thats really high

Yup, I'm definitely going...unless they rescind my acceptance for slacking off;) What about joining me at Amherst?:)
FYI, the total cost that they worked out for me is $50420. With an EFC of $500 deduced, that makes a finaid package of $49920 WITH NO LOAN. Rising seniors, definitely include Amherst in your list:D

Miaoling, the last time I checked, all the nuts and bolts in my head were still in place. Of course, I'm going to Amherst. What am I? Crazy? I assume that I'll see you there in August.

Any intel who has not yet put Amherst on his list ought to. Let's not also forget that it is the top LAC!!!

I thought Williams topped Amherst...

Well for the past couple of years yes, with a very, very slight margin, if you are talking about USNEWS rankings. But if I am not wrong, Amherst was ranked 1st more times than did Williams - or Swarthmore for that matter. Rankings change every year, and it would be pointless to say which is better than which just based on the most recent rankings.

Ah, I am so jealous of miaoling and switch!

Izzy, you may see Vassar differently. But, as far as I heard, Vassar rarely accepted any student from my country. The last person who got accepted though, had to pay $15K/yr. Usually Vassar, Lehigh & F&M fall in the same category and reject almost all who apply to there; at least thats the case from my country!

@woebegone...

Still hoping about williams and amherst???
I am, the first round waitlist decisions should be out in two weeks...

Did you send anything to Will/AM?

Good luck Woe

where are you going if you not get off the waitlist?

Yes I am still holding on to that little hope... and yeah I sent a letter, an email and some additional recs to them...

I'll be going to Conn if I don't get off the waitlists. What about u?

And thanks, good luck to you too!

@Amherst vs. Williams: first, you better not say things like "Williams is better than Amherst" in my face:p Second, if I was accepted to both (I never applied to Wil), I'd dump Wil for Am'erst any day. There's this Open Curriculum which I'm dying for, and what's more Williams is located in the middle of nowhere (ever wondered why they're so hot on sports? They have nothing else to do:D)
@woebegone: I'm still praying for CC'ers waitlisted at Amherst to get in:) After all, I'm lucky enough to get in exactly one school, let alone the school is Amherst;) Conncoll is a cool school too, and we're in the same NECAC so we'll eventually meet;)

Hey miaoling, switch and woebegone, I was just teasing y'all when I said that Williams is better than Amherst. :p No hard feelings. I am profoundly astonished and amazed that you got admitted/waitlisted at such a top school, which is pretty much the most selective LAC. Congratulations and good luck at college!

Thanks, Maxy.

But do those ranking really matter? To me Williams and Amherst are equals. The strange thing is that I never heard of Williams until after I got my decision from Amherst. I never applied to Williams. I just thought that Amherst would be great for me (turns out the the admissions officers agree).

Woebegone, good luck. I really hope that you get off the wait-list.

Miaoling, did you apply to only one college? And, that ONE college was Amherst? THAT WAS BOLD!!! What if you did not get accepted?

thanks guys. but i dun think i have much chances of getting off the waitlist... my ex platoon commander who promised to write me a supplementary rec went on a dissappearing act lately so i dun think he's gonna do it after all...

Oh come on dude, I'm not one of these happy-go-lucky people who don't mind if their college is Amherst or Stony Farm Community College:p Actually I applied to 7 schools and Amherst is the only one wise enough to take me in (wait and see hehehe:D) Talk about finaid, I hate Cornell so so so much. I don't care that they rejected me, but they accepted my pal and didn't give her ANY finaid, so now she's gonna take a gap year (imagine taking a gap year after getting in Cornell!)

what do you know of JHU or UChicago? Are they considered ricky options regarding fin aid? I mean...I heard they give extremely good financial aid packages to few intels. Is that true?

yes...thats true

but is there any use applying to JHU for aid? arent chances tooo slim?

MIT never said they were need-blind for internationals.

MIT never said they were need-blind for internationals.

ofcourse they do... it says on the website & my interviewer told me... plus, you need to send in finaid documents by the 1st of march and by then theyve made most of their decisions

yes, chances r toooooo slim for those applying for aid at JHU. SM calculated that the admission toughness increases by around 450% for Intls seeking aid at JHU.
