hey, my friend is a rising senior and he wants to become a High School History teacher. He has a 3.6-3.7 and a 31 on the ACT. So far, he has MSU and EMU lined up as safeties. What are some good matches and reaches for him?

Northwestern would be a good reach, I suppose.

Vanderbilt is also quite good I hear.

Vandy, UVA, MSU, UDel, Temple, Muhlenberg, Millersville, West Chester. All very good Edu. Schools.

"...So far, he has MSU and EMU lined up as safeties. What are some good matches and reaches for him?"

With all due respect, even though EMU is a very good education school (the oldest in the nation, in fact), it has far lesser to offer than MSU; it's not on MSU's level -- but, Drew, I don't think you were saying that... Maybe your friend is, though.

Eastern's likely to give him a large scholarship and it's better than wmu/cmu for ed so I don't see why he should take it off?

Oh, no, I'm not saying he should take Eastern Michigan off his list. But the implication from your post was that MSU and EMU were both equal-weighted safeties. But on all levels -- quality faculty, placements, tradition, research, reputation, quality, well known alumni (even going back over a century ago with alum/education pioneer – William Chandler Bagley – back when MSU focused on agriculture & engineering) and diversity of fellow students, yadda, yadda, yadda -- MSU ranks way ahead of EMU. Besides, for most students considering education, nationally, MSU is much more a target school than a safety… Keep in mind, MSU is generally considered nationally as being among the top 10 (or 5 on some lists) in education. Also note that education -- as particularly pioneered by MSU & Harvard in the groundbreaking Holmes Commission (of these 2 schools in the 1980s that altered the study of education), the stress was shifted to students gaining a thorough liberal arts education as most affecting the quality of a teaching. A one-year post B.A. course on the more practical aspects of teaching -- generally in the form of a Master's degree -- is required by Michigan State and most top line ed schools. On the contrary, traditional teacher training schools like EMU (and WMU) focused much more on the practical aspects of teaching.

I don't see what point you're trying to make. Most people know that MSU is stronger in nearly every discipline (including education) Some of the bes teachers I had in HS were MSU education grads and I considered attending MSU myself, but decided to attend another school. EMU is more of a financial safety (his mom works at EMU so he automatically gets 1/2 tuition) than a traditional safety

The point being that college is too difficult a choice for it to come down to who gives you the most money. Other variables should weigh in. Can you put a price tag on 4 years of being unhappy and educationally unfulfilled? Can a free, or mainly free, tuition compensate for that? I think not. I've steered kids away from MSU who clearly don't want to go there but are enticed by a generous scholarship package. You can try and put a happy face on it to justify your decision, but I just don't think it's worth it.
