does anyone have a link / reference to the top prep schools by endowment?

many thanks in advance.

I dont know how updated this list is but, check it out:
http://www.boardingschoolreview.com/largest_endowments.php

While the raw numbers can be dynamic, if the inquiry is to identify the top-ranked schools in terms of endowment (and not to then use that list to determine actual endowment amounts), that list is solid.

EDIT: There's a caveat: Schools, like Taft (which should be compared to the others at approx. $130MM), that do not participate in BSR are not on the list. But of highly-endowed schools, Taft is the only one that I can think of that's not there.

the ranking is right, the numbers are old, smaller than the actuals

I was playing around with wikpedia and found this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamehameha_Schools

It says that this school has a $6.8 billion endowment....not sure its true, but its crazy if it was

I'm pretty sure that is true, but keep in mind that they have over 5,000 students at different campuses.

The largest endowment,by far, is the Milton S. Hershey school in Pennsylvania. I believe that the endowment is between $5 Billion and $10 Billion. They have so much money that the alums and CBS' 60 Minutes criticized the school for spending tens of millions on unneeded buildings and infrastructure.

The Bishop Estate is a very different animal than the prep schools discussed here. Read the Wikipedia piece about its history and who goes there. Also, do a little Internet research and you should find some real good articles about some of the alleged scandals and abuses that have occurred with the administration of the estate.

Of the elite prep schools St. Paul's School has the largest endowment per student. Andover may lead the pack in amount of $ among the elite prep boarding schools. Private day schools was a close battle three years ago between Albuquerque Academy in New Mexico and The Westminster Schools in Atlanta,Georgia.

The head of the Board of Trustees at St. Paul's School, a SPS graduate living in Atlanta, was the Chiarman of the Board at The Westminster Schools. Small world. It's amazing the impact SPS has on prep education in this country!

Yes, SPS does have the highest per person endowment than any of the NE prep schools.

D'yer Maker, Taft is now on BSR.

in terms of endownment per students
it goes
1. SPS
2. Hotchkiss
2. Groton
4. Andover
4. Exeter
6. Deerfield

According to my calculation based on the endownment and number of students

please bare in mind when you look at endownment you should look at the per student ratio

Taft and Loomis Chaffee are not on the active database of boardingschoolreview. Both have substantial endowments. You can search for Taft and get a very old listing. As a point of reference, they list the annual boarding fee as $29,100 when annual boarding for this year is around $38,000.

Absolute Endowment Numbers:

1) Exeter $806M
2) Andover $670M
3) St. Pauls $389M
4) Hotchkiss $365M
5) Deefield $334M
6) Groton $289M
7) Peddie $275M
8) Choate $235M
9) Lawrenceville $225M
10) Mercersberg $180M
11) Taft $172M
12) Milton $150M
NMH $150M

*All endowement #'s were taken from school websites, except Hotchkiss / Milton which I had to find on Wikipedia.

*Lawrenceville hasn't published updated endowment info since 6/30/05 because it has launched a $200M endowment campaign for it's bicentenial in 2010. According to the school newspaper, >$80M has already been raised, although it is not included in above number.

*Choate is also in the middle of a $200M endowment campaign.

*NMH has an interesting chart ranking endowments among its peer schools (Top 40 of them) - found on the 4th page of the document online at http://www.nmhschool.org/about/swf/NMH_White_paper.pdf
Those numbers were published in '04, presumably for year end '03 endowments

*The BSR numbers are all very old, just like the rest of the information on that website.

NMH has a high endownment because they count that campus which they lack money to run as their "assets" and they are still trying to sell it...
They closed down one of their 2 campuses years ago...

bearcats, just curious but how do you know that? It would certainly be unusual (and misleading) to do so, being as the property does not generate interest income. BTW, the NMH endowment number comes from the admissions FAQ on their website.

I know they have been having a problem selling the property, partly because they want another school to take over the old campus.

Excuse me, but what is NMH?

Northfield Mount Hermon

Ah, I see.
