"btw, i turned down some highly selective places for Cornell, and I regret it so much today."

aw, why???? don't you like Cornell? or do you think the more highly selective places would give you more opportunities?

Warblersrule,

Do you go to Wake? I thought you went to another school in NC. Are you a transfer student?

I had hoped nobody would analyze the comment. :o It's a long story:

I'd wanted to go to Duke for a long time. However, Wake was my second choice, and I got a great deal of money in scholarships (~35K). Since my family needs financial aid, Wake was the better choice. I enrolled at Wake, and rejected my other offers. About month later, I received a phone call from the assistant director of admissions at Duke. He told me they were still holding my spot if I wanted it. The grants in my financial aid package were drastically increased (~32K), and the loans were reduced. Since Duke was a much better deal now (although not as good a deal as Wake) and it was my first choice, I enrolled at Duke and withdrew my enrollment at Wake.

My point was that many people choose up and coming schools for various reasons, so top Southern students shouldn't limit themselves. :)

Thanks for everyone's responses so far. The most interesting was college2332's response saying I was 10 years late...I want to do political science major and am very conservative and republican. I love the south and southern culture..My dad teaches at Vanderbilt and I live thirty minutes from the campus. I know Vanderbilt is becoming more ethnically balanced (is that a phrase?) and not as southern but do you think it'd still be a good fit? Are their patches and remnants of southerness (yet again, not a word) but thanks again...

I have resisted posting here because of your thread title....hehehe. As someone from outside of your geographic area.......Vanderbilt is very southern in feel....social, political and every other way. I will resist making other comments.

Looking for recomendations on southern schools...somewhere between gun toting, rebel-flag waving rednecks and bmw driving popped collar preppy boys is pretty much the ideal school.
[/quote]

Most top schools have lots of jews and Asians and very few, if any, "rebel-flag waving rednecks" anyway. ;) Did you check out Bob Jones U in South Carolina?

Maybe he is looking for a Daisy Duke???

hazmat, when was the last time you visited Vanderbilt? I'm from New York and I disagree with your assessment.

Three years ago.....I know current students and my personal assessment could very well disagree w/ yours. I can understand that.

Lets face it, if it were too "southern", people would transfer. People just love to stereotype about the north and south. Take a walk around some schools in "BAASTAN" (Boston) and see how open minded and "Northern" it is. (NOT!:))

Warblersrule,

Didn't mean to open up a can of worms. BUT, I think it is ok that you really wanted to be a Devil all along. You tried the Demon route and it didn't work for you, so you went back to being a Devil.

I just didn't want you to mislead others in to thinking that you decided to be a Demon when you really are a Devil and always wanted to be one! So, in essence, you really never chose to be a Demon over a Devil, contrary to your earlier post.

:) :) :)

njmom~~what exactly is too Southern? I mean people choose to go there for two reasons.....they love Southern or they love the merit awards. Enough said. Who ever stated that Yankees were any more openminded than Southerners? No me!

To the daisy duke comment, bob jones comment, and oxymoron comment...I disagree, obviously, but thanks for the constructive criticism (sarcasm?)

I'm not opposed to work, and have worked hard throughout high school...just saying I'm not a study freak and i know they exist (and slave over CC)

hazmat: Not to be too opinionated, but no such thing as too southern

1sokkermom: Didn't understand a word of your reply

Davidson, Elon, W&L, Wake, Vandy, Auburn Honors, FURMAN, etc

All schools I'm looking at....

And a few in California..Random, I know...

-Alex

honestly, where is the love for Rice, it's a spectaculor school, and cheap too!!!!

I already said that I don't consider Rice a southern school. Texas isn't "southern"- it is Texas.

I am glad you have a sense of humor and you seem to know exactly what you want. I know you will find that place, do well and be happy. Mostly I like the fact that you can enjoy our responses and still be true to yourself. You are gonna be just fine.

The most I know about Southern is that All Y'all is plural. I learned that recently.

JT,
Hint: a (Blue) Devil is the mascot at Duke, a Demon (Deacon) is the mascot at Wake Forest.

One of the posters stated that he/she chose Wake over a list of schools, including Duke. In fact, that poster is currently a student at Duke.

By the way, both are excellent choices. I personally think that Wake is a very underrated school.

(Even though we are damn yankees, we are partial to NC.)

1sokkermom-lol. I didn't mean to be misleading. And I am a he. :)

JTshocker- You seem to have a great, well-balanced list.

Thanks for the comments. I know about Demon Deacons and Devils just too many D-words in repetition... Any other comments?

And Vandy is looking pretty good after beating UT 28-24...
