Calling all myth busters. Either add more to the list or tell the uniformed why these urban legends do not hold up to close scrutiny.

Cornell is a suicide school

Cornell has a brutal cutthroat academic environment (pressure cooker, etc )

Ithaca is boring

The weather in Ithaca is way worse than _________. (fill in the blank Cambridge, MA; New Haven, CT; Hanover, NH; Providence, RI; etc )

Students at Cornell are unfriendly

Go ahead add more

And heres a conundrum: why do people in one breath castigate Cornell for being the easiest Ivy to get into and therefore somehow beneath consideration and in the next sentence try and dissuade people from attending because it might be too hard. Go figure?

i don't get it either, the job prospect after graduating are great, but they are great for anyone at an ivy league school. i think people think getting into HYP is an outstanding accomplishment and thats the hardest part "the hardest part about harvard is getting in" ever heard that quote? well i think people think gettinginto HYP is something they never did or couldn't so when kids do it its and oustanding feet. but for cornell it is known as the 'farmer school" farming isn't a very impressive occupation, so people assess cornell as a "lower ivy" for that reason and many other misconceptions. it seems only in america cornell is rated so low, but in the rest of the would people list cornell right at the top with HYPSM.

1. Cornell is a suicide school
~Um, its sad that people can think like this. every school has someone that commits suicide and i don't understand why people have to pick out cornell just cause there are deep gorges to jump off of. actually, i believe in the year 2004, NYU had six suicides.

3. Ithaca is boring
~so not true. i'm only a prefrosh, but the 3 nights i spent at cornell during cornell days was wonderful. i stayed in collegetown and i was shown around the campus (ex. bell tower, fitness center, etc.). there were many activities going on (ex. i went to the cayuga's waiters concert and that was amazing. they had after parties and i went to one of them in collegetown. and there are always people in collegetown weeknights and weekends. if partying isn't your thing, there are always people in the dorms to talk to.

4. The weather in Ithaca is way worse than _________. (fill in the blank Cambridge, MA; New Haven, CT; Hanover, NH; Providence, RI; etc )
~i'm gonna be studying atmospheric science, so i am definitely well familiar with the weather in the New England region ... and i can say that the winter weather in Ithaca is nothing compared to weather in the Midwest and Montana regions. Those places can go -43 sometimes. Its cold there. Its cold in other places. People here just deal with it. there are worst places to be (like University of Kansas which typically has tornadoes that go through or near the campus every two years).

5. Students at Cornell are unfriendly
~hahahaah, i laugh at this. people stay up till like 4 in the morning whether partying, chatting away, or just doing something else. this place is definitely not hard to socialize. its what you make of it.

*6. Ithaca is just farmland. *
*7. Cornell is not as well known as the other ivies. *

hey hey...i obviously know what's Dartmouth...i'm just exaggerating. But to be frank, not many people here in India or any place outside US for that, would have heard of Dartmouth and Brown unless they're seriosuly applying to US.

Just a note about the weather thing...maybe it's not technically worse than the other ives, but I don't think you have to walk over a mile to class (uphill in the snow) at any of the other schools either.

Concerning the snow issue, I visited a while back and they showed us charts concerning the snowfall at Cornell vs. other cities. Ithaca has less snow than Boston!

So while we have to walk in relatively less snow for a longer distance, they have to walk in heavier snow for a shorter distance haha

Half of Cornell isn't even run by Cornell - it's run by SUNY.

The statutory schools water down the "real" Cornell degree.

we all know (if you dont know, you should become educated) that these aren't true. It annoys the hell out of me to hear "SUNY Cornell" and all of that similar crap. I'm damn proud to be an ILRie and extremely grateful that New York gives me some nice financial aid because of it. :)
